I'm all for the stores themselves deciding what to put on the shelves, but at least here the pressure from muslim groups seems to be leading to legislation: all non-halal food must be marked with symbols (e.g. a recognizable drawing of a pig) and halal-food must be made available in normal markets. If that's so, it should be the other way around, too.

The laws should always be symmetric and the same for all. If all the markets are required BY LAW to serve halal or kosher food, it should also mean that halal and kosher stores are required to serve non-Halal or non-Kosher food.

Very stupid. Any business should be able to appeal to whatever market it desires, so long as they aren't saying: no blacks, jews, christians, gays etc.

It's the only store in the area. It used to be a general store. By changing it to halal, they're making the rest of the community travel miles to the next general store. Why the fuck should they? And this is the local Council, they've always decided which types of shops are allowed - if they didn't we'd have streets of one type of shop and no choice.

Well not entirely anyways not in this case, the small supermarket was created for this neighborhood, the neighborhood is multicultural, and there are also older people, who have to favor this supermarket to avoid them having to travel to the bigger supermarket. Part of the lease in this case includes the requirement to sell all general products, and the mayor agrees that the place should sell porc and alcohol, for the very reason that the supermarket is a neighborhood supermarket and is a facility for older residents.

Now for the 95% halal in that place, as long as he has a selection of the same products that aren't halal that is ok even if it only represents 5%, but a lot of people don't agree with eating halal products (because of the way they are killed) personally it doesn't bother me, halal meat is inherently cheaper though.

This is how the French are different from the Americans. Here in this country we let groups have their individual freedom as long as it doesn't endanger someone else. So girls and women can wear hijabs to school and there's no issue with it. Also, Chick-Fil-A can close on Sunday and there's no problem with that.

In France, they seem to choose the wrong battles to fight. Why not focus on getting the terrorists instead of fanning the flames of the religious wars, as this latest edict against the halal supermarket is sure to do? Teaching police and the public to be more vigilant will accomplish more than telling a grocery store it has to sell pork. And are they going to require the kosher grocery stores to do the same?

Why didn't the French police check the contents of the truck in Nice, which was illegally parked for many hours? Why did they just take the driver's word that he was delivering ice cream? Why did the stupid French judge allow the priest killer not to be electronically monitored in the morning? These are the issues the French should address, not whether pork is found in the meat department.

On one hand, it's a nonviolent religious principle that doesn't deserve to be violated. The French also don't even let women wear head scarves, which are required when women visit the Vatican! On the other hand, the rest of us have had so many principles violated lately, I am glad the shit is landing on some protected groups too.
