Sorry, but since I'm an American who rarely watches Rugby, yet I still love to watch it, what does a "test match" mean? Does it count at the end of the year or is it like a pre-season baseball game?

It's an international thats not recognised officially. Gives the teams a chance to play each other a few times. The all blacks won the last 18 matches. Its significant though. We've never beat them.
