Not to mention that nobody sends Christmas cards anymore. Mailing one with the cost of stamp and card comes out to about 85 cents, give or take. The message is that your relationship isn't worth the expense. Sad, really.

Consumerism and a corporate owned world. This is the mad world we've allowed to take form. I think it's past time we ended this corporate consumerism based society. It's a failed experiment. A spiritually empty existence based on debt/wage slavery and a mafia bankster run pyramid schemes. Empty, lifeless, hellish. And a left / right duality based conflict system to distract from and maintain it at the same time.

Is that really surprising? The capitalist, consumerism, 'everything is a commodity to be exploited for profit' mind set has become a cancer in society.

The masses have been indoctrinated to think that making alot of money and/or gaining celebrity status is the pinnacle of 'success' as a human being - regardless of the consequences of their actions on others.

The sheeple applaud 'reality TV' programs where 'house hunters' refurbish a house then sell if for millions of dollars...but completely ignore the poor couple who have to spend more money in order to buy that house.

The main stream media applaud companies like Apple for their 'innovation'...but largely ignore their tax avoidance and exploitation of workers.

Society has largely become a cesspool of arrogance, self-rightiousness, extreme selfishness - rationalised through economic theory - and a suffocating blanket of normalcy bias. I could go on...but you know what I mean...

Not in my house, not in my house...

I'm one of those rare birds, a Christian; went to midnight mass which was very special.

I gave a bare minimum of Christmas cards that I picked from my collection of cards I'd bought in previous years - some to my kids because they're overseas, some to my close neighbors because that's the convention here and I don't want to seem even more weird than they already think I am!

Had a minimal Christmas lunch - what would Jesus or atheist humanists have to say about stuffing ourselves sick with far too much rich food...?

Gifts? Bought NOTHING. For the first time ever.
I made - yes, made with my own hands - little gifts from wood and materials I had lying around the place. Only for closest family and a truly wonderful friend.

Spent my money like another of my neighbors on putting actual food into a food bank (that way, you can be more sure that those who need it will actually get it: most 'charities' are just evil big business these days).

And what do I want with gifts..? Nothing. I have everything I need and want.
Thank God.

Think about Christmas....ugly sweaters are a thing now, sold in kits or available at Target or Party City. No sweet little Grandmas or Moms in the mix, sewing with love or sentiment.

TV stations play the same once-beloved movie for 24 hours, totally killing any specialness or "once a year" feeling, the repetition turns the sentiment into snark or irony.

Several stations even have a Yule Log playing on the TV for hours on end. Or you can get it anytime on your computer for the fake warm fuzzy feeling.

Presents have been replaced by gift cards, frought with obligation and expectation instead of generosity or surprise.

Christmas trees are fake. Or miniature. With tiny little or ornaments that reflect or personalities or lifestyle instead of the Spirit of the season.

So last Christmas? That was a decade or more ago.

We are post-cultural at this point. No shared values or traditions. All just having our own little special snowflake experiences. No depth, no feeling. Just checking off the boxes on the calendar.

I'm glad its over, and I think this was the last Christmas I'll do.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13183066

I feel the exact same way.

Also.. interestingly... everything was fine at my place as long as we stayed in the 'fantasy' land of no meaning. I brought up one 'controversial' topic at the end of the night Christmas Eve thinking that everyone was in a fine headspace and there would be no big deal. My family shit down - my adult daughter looked like she was going to cry and then after I asked her why she can't talk about anything meaningful anymore she *did* cry.
I felt shocked and sad.
I felt like I'd dropped a bomb on the house by accident - it was that bad. I got angry. They got angry.
Then we went to bed, got up, and pretended nothing happened.

I'd say it was the booze but it's like that every time ... stay away from anything important and keep the talk to fingernails and music.

crazy. makes me feel so alone.

I mean I catch your drift, but all those things were always empty, fake, and essentially worthless which make that pagan-antichrist holiday which masquerades as being Christian... God's pouring out his Spiirt of Truth, and revealing all the falsehood and imposters... only true religion, i.e. a personal relationship with God through the Lord Jesus Christ, being born again by the Holy Spirit, and through the reading of the reformation King James BIble and prayer will ever truly be satisfying... oh and it's 365, 24/7, 12 months a year. Ask God to give you the Holy Spirit and reveal himself to you, He will, He promised in His word.

Some random thoughts in regard to this post and comments...

I no longer consider myself a Christian (although I certainly hold a lot of Christian values). I believe in a higher power and maybe Jesus did exist. I don't know...it's irrelevant...the point is to be the best person you can be. Jesus was an example of that. That being said, I haven't celebrated Xmas since I was a kid...even if I was Christian, it's actually a pagan holiday if you look at history. Second, it's extremely commercialized. I save lots of money, time and stress by not participating. I've also always been one of those people who never wants to do what the masses are doing. Finally, I only have one close family member left (mom) so there's really no point.

About the person who said they can't discuss anything deep with their family - I feel for you. I am lucky though that I can discuss deep stuff with my mom and certain friends. I can't stand the superficiality of the world anymore.

As far as cultural decline...I believe that media forms culture, not the other way around. People are too susceptible to the programming. And so, TPTB are shaping society. It's a tough thing to overcome because public schools are there to dumb us down now. I am encouraged by the current backlash against the MSM, but it's not going to be enough to turn the tide. We are getting closer to the movie Idiocracy every day.

Technology has also been part of our downfall because it's all been about making money, not truly bettering society. I honestly think our society is not spiritually advanced enough to use technology for the better. And I admit, for a loner like me, it's easy to fall into the trap of vegging out on the computer instead of interacting with people in real life. But, I've always been like that unless you add alcohol, which I can't have much of these days.

Anyways, those are just some of my random thoughts...

Re: It's a post-nostalgic, uber-kitsch, ironic world now. Devoid of tradition, meaning or attachment.
Christmas was gutted a long time ago, with the rise of socialism. A different, atheistic culture grew up inside of the predominantly white, Christian society that lasted until probably the last half of the twentieth century.

Christmas, like it or not, is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, celebrated in the dead of winter. Little by little, there was no real reason to celebrate except for the gifts and a little break when people were tired of the long dark days.

For a good portion of the population, the only reason to get together and celebrate is based on greed, gluttony, pride, which open the door to their cousins, anger, lust and laziness.

Here, more clearly revealed every year, is the real face of the cult of socialism, replacing the religion of true Christ-centered Christianity.
 Quoting: Lily o' the Valley

I love this post! Without Jesus and Christianity, what are we celebrating? We have Thanksgiving as a get together. Christmas certainly isn't all about gifts. It's CHRISTmas. Everything is being replaced with such cynical, Godless viewpoints. Commercialism everywhere. We live virtual lives. No meaning, no real love, this is the result of removing God from our lives.
