Already have herbs, tomatoes and eggplants. Putting in snap beans, lettuce, kale and basil next week. “If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.” Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace "But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you." - Job 12:7,8 "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." - Hunter S. Sarah Conner User ID: 74138698 United States 02/22/2017 03:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This year I am trying something new. Getting several bales of straw and covering them with composted dirt. Plant Swiss Chard, Kale, lettuces, green and wax beans, sweet potatoes, broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, and squash on the mounds. As the summer turns to Fall, the straw decomposes and begins to warm the soil. This extends the growing season by a bunch. We need that here in the mountains. Nights that freeze we cover with garden blankets. Mounds are raised, so they are easier to work on. We can't start until June, however. There's four feet of snow covering my yard at the moment, and more comin.' Not doing tomatoes - pretty impossible here. |

I will NOT miss picking up those fucking pine cones every time I have to mow the lawn. Gonna plant a weeping willow in it's place. It's similar to a potato, and grows well in cold climates (it does fine at 14,000 feet in the Andes. Found a dealer that sells the tubers in OR, so have some of them coming. Then the usual stuff, sugar snap peas, pole beans, three types of tomatoes, two types of kale (lacinato and Ethiopian), snow peas, celery, and a bunch of herbs. Mostly these will be in raised beds and we have two of the garden towers with the small openings on the sides. Not ready to start yet, since we still have some cold nights here in Puget Sound. Just garden dreaming for another couple of weeks. Also potatoes (Yukon gold and red skinned) in those grow-bags. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 47349394 I've been growing Goji for a few years in Ohio, it's a really hardy plant, get a few named cultivars for easy berry picking (there will be TONS), leaves make great tea too. Highly recommend this plant, just be ready to prune, prune, prune. I'm training mine into tree form, it takes a few years with support and lots of pruning. |
