I-295: Fire shuts down both spans of the Delaware Memorial Bridge

They've been working on that bridge for the past couple of years; it's old and in constant need of maintenance.

In general, the whole area is traffic hell and will be absolute gridlock if the bridge is closed for an extended period of time.

Jim Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, said sparks from a welder working under the span set construction material on fire sending a towering column of black smoke over the twin bridges.


I am hoping it is resolved quickly for everyones' sake.

The DE side always seems worse than the NJ side.

This incident was no different. They opened the southbound side long before northbound. Traffic backed up into Wilmington.

Funfact: it's the longest twin span suspension bridge in existence.
