And that is what's happening in St. Louis. Small businesses have adjusted their business days and hours to accommodate the new cost of labor. The new hours push customers to big businesses like Lowes or Walmart and hurts the small businesses more and has lead to layoffs and more decreased hours.


Aside from that, stop pretending like there are so many families out there living on just minimum wage or that tax payers are subsidizing those employees' families. Very few jobs are minimum wage and even fewer are staffed by single income adults earning money for a family.

It's the suck to be sure, but you have to come up with an idea, product or service that is worth something.

Hopefully, they will round them up and send them to Hillary's Fun Camps, this time. Fewer useless eaters in the market will cause wages to rise. Then we can all be happy.

It is surprising that they are lowering it...once it was in, I never thought the corp sponsors would let it go down again until all small business was out of bidness. Big corps love to get the wage just high enough to put small business out - the labor costs are lower relatively for them so they will always win and then gain market share on top.

While you may not like what was being said above, they are not wrong.

For example, think of the fast food industry, the headlines recently have been replete with stories about McDonald's and the like moving to more automation. When the wages of those employees are artificially increased, the companies you are hurting are not the big corporations. The large corporate operations of the world have the capital and resources to develop self serve kiosks, and thereby removing the expensive cashiers from the equation. Next up will be the actual food prep.

A small Mom and Pop deli or sub shop who competes with McDonald's does not have the same capacity and will be saddled with costs that force them to be less competitive.

Additionally, those people that would have been earning a wage, developing a skill, (if they apply themselves) and beginning to learn how to exist in society will now be without that job. Those unskilled entry level jobs which were supposed to be filled by kids who could learn what it means to hold a job and have responsibility will be removed at a quicker pace the higher the minimum wage goes.

That's not to say that there shouldn't look for a way to re-balance the scales with respect to the disparity in earnings from the top to bottom of the scale. Unfortunately, the minimum wage solution only hurts the people at the bottom, and in a variety of ways. It's a very lazy solution and always latched onto by the politically expedient. Those are the people you should worry about. The ones who know what kind of circus you like with your bread and seek to give it to the cheering crowds.

Were I a crazy eyed conspiracy theorist, I might think that over-reach with the min. wage increases could actually be the plan of the elite class themselves. This would give them political cover for reduction of staff due to cost cutting through automation. They could point to all the small business going under and say we have to reduce staff or we will suffer the same fate. All the while the pool of competitors shrinks while they reduce labor cost dramatically. That would be something akin to nirvana for a CEO. Better pricing power and lower production cost at the same time.

If the Governor were truly principled, then he would abolish the minimum wage altogether.

In a PRIVATELY owned company, wages and salaries can be kept private. This is up to the discretion of the owner whether or not to disclose.

However, in a PUBLICLY TRADED company, all wages and salaries should be disclosed. Salaries and total compensation for key individuals should be subject to vote by the shareholders.
