What Were Your FAVORITE TV SHOWS FROM THE 1970's & 80's? -& Earlier-
Here was my reply when someone asked for some suggestions to some TV shows from that era. I'm posting some suggestions for U.S. TV shows & including a couple from the UK, which had equally as wonderful shows. I will post some more of those, as well, hopefully. Please post your own favorite shows as well.

Don Rickles as "CPO SHARKEY" in the 80's, which was quite funny:

"ABC Sunday Night Movie" - 1977 through 1981. When you heard this theme, like Pavlov's dog salivating at the bell, you KNEW that a (probably good) "TV MOVIE" was about to come on. Some classics including "Brian's Song" was aired on there.

"JENNIFER SLEPT HERE"
About a dead, glamorous hollyweird star who haunts the house of a 14 year old guy but only he can see her
The series improved with age, had an adult type humor even though the protaganist was 14. Someone uploaded a bunch of them, starting with the first episode:

"The Champions" (1968) Interesting show which was on "ITC" British Television in the mid 1960's: About a group of 3 psychics who solve crimes/terror around the world
[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

'THE TIME TUNNEL' (1966?) Irwin Allen's classic sci-fi time portal -

'JOHNNY CYPHER IN DIMENSION ZERO' (1960)
cartoon

'Alias Smith & Jones'
The one thing I remember about it, as a little kid when it aired, is that one of the stars was shot & killed, kiboshing the big hit Western series about outlaws immediately. The show went off the air. We all thought they'd replace the actor who unfortunately died, but know, wasn't to be.

The pilot film, still up on ewe.toob:

"THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW"
Excellent comedy sketches starring legendary people
Here is a very famous sketch with Tim Conway & Carol Burnett, about a VERY jealous & suspicious wife.. Worth a watch, if you've never seen it:

And, from Carol Burnett, one of the funniest sketches in television history, and from the 1960's, unbelievably. The freshly graduated dentist, played by the incomparable ones: Tim Conway, and his poor victim/patient, Harvey Korman:

The legendary James Garner in "The Rockford Files"

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

'The Snoop Sisters' show rotated with 'Columbo' & 'McMillan & Wife', (et als) - all of them 'who done it' type, mystery shows

And, their unforgettable collective theme song on NBC's 1971 through 1982 "The Mystery Movie", every Sunday night, as I recall. Our whole family would watch it together:

Last but not least, the amazing Benny Hill, what can I say, unforgettable!

Kung Fu

We got the BBC The Prisoner quite late in the seventies. Maybe 1974 an it was released in 1967.

Fireball XL5:
The Theme from this HIGHLY MEMORABLE, phenomenal sci-fi, animated puppets in space, TV Show!

And A Few Episodes: - it aired during the 'transitional' B&W to color era in television. Some were in monochrome, others in color/colour, however you spell it in your country...

We all loved the movie and the TV series, "Kung Fu", starring David Carradine, who later hanged himself, during a sexual ritual, bizarrely enough

Thanks,

Me too, it surprises one when one starts to think hard to remember. I know it'd be easier to just look them up but I am only operating on memory here, then looking up links on ewe.toob.

When Saturday Night Live first came out, it was experimental and funny. Sometimes jokes went nowhere...and awkward embarrassing pauses followed. They were the first ones to do spoof commercials like Flucker's jam that had flavors like painful rectal itch and nose hair. It sort of was ripping off Monty Python and their crunchy frog routine.

Belushi was a madman and Animal House made him wildy out of control.

PBS ran Monty Python in 1973 or so and nudity was not allowed on television but random sketches revealed boobs or they were featured in Terry Gilliam's animations. It was so brief that it barely registered.

If you rewatch those shows, they had those terrible laugh tracks with very artificial sound effects. It's flat out peculiar as if they lacked the confidence to believe the jokes were funny enough. It's very forced.

After Star Trek ran from 1967-1970, then it went into near constant reruns. And cable in 1976 made it possible to see Star Trek all the time.

Kolchek the Night Stalker was very limited but diverting as few shows dealt with the supernatural. Mostly you had to watch BBC tv shows which ran on PBS to get any quality occult shows on ghosts and vampires.

Yep, very true. I watched every single episode, 1975 though 2006, approximately. Then they got to partisan political & I stopped watching. Didn't think it was funny anymore.

Flucker's jam was on their troupe comedy album as well, from 1973 through 1974, when most of the "Not ready for prime time players" were on National Lampoon's Radio Hour. They repeated a lot of those sketches on the show. Gilda, Belushi, Lorraine & Chevy Chase were also part of 'Second Cty' comedy troop in Toronto & in Chicago, where they honed their comedic genius & craft.

The newer cast members and years had their moments, even the dark 1981 had a few gems, especial Julia Louis Dreyfuss, Gail Matthias & Ken Kazerinsky, who I thought was very funny, but people hated them because they weren't the original cast.

The shows in the 70's mostly had live audiences. They would annrounce it or display a graphic explaining that "This show was shot in front of a live audience" - because people had been complaining since the 1950's when the 'laugh-track machine' started being used, to save money in production costs, mostly. Variety shows had live audiences, including Carol Burnette's show; People would tune in each week and hope for a blooper/an error in the show where one comedian would forget their lines/laugh at another actor or have a pratfall or something happen to them while filming production. They would LEAVE them in the final edit of the show, making it even more 'live' for back then. They were the only show to do so, back then, because it WAS FUNNY.

Not really. Some were live like Carol Burnet but most were not like Cannon, Barnaby Jones,Night Gallery, MASH, Brady Bunch, Gillgan's Island, etc.

PBS reran the Ernie Kovacs show which had been very experimental in the sixties and likely was better received in 1975.

Well, yeah, the comedy sitcoms had mostly canned laughter, as we used to call it. Amazingly, I Love Lucy had a live audience, even that lady who would always scream, "Uh Oh!", she was real, albeit probably paid to do so.

The dramas/sci-fi series had no laughter, so they didn't need a machine to produce the fake laughter.

I was working so many hours and never had time or the opportunity to watch much television. I felt like the last guy in America to buy a VCR and only since my youngest so sweetly asked to watch some Disney films.

It probably would be fun to watch some episodes as they all are available.

I know, we would all comment in my 3rd grade class the next morning, or Monday morning, if it ran on the weekend. At about the same time, or at least, 1974, as I recall, PBS also ran another Brit TV show that had TOPLESS GIRLS DANCING, as I vividly recall. It was called, I believe "Is There A Doctor In The House", or something to that effect. It was shocking to see nudity on American TV, of ANY variety, let alone for a prolonged scene on a British television show. It was quite stimulating for a 10 year old, let me tell you... lol.. I had always thought the English to be very reserved prior to that. That idea went out with that one.. big time. Still, to this day, I wonder how they aired it here, on public television. Wouldn't the FCC have fined them heavily for doing so? It was like watching PORN - ON BROADCAST TELEVISION IN AMERICA, IN 1974 !!!
