maybe it was caught on the fur and fell off there or perhaps your cat has a UTI and is avoiding the cat box due to pain

it is not normal for a cat to go outside the litterbox, so you should take your cat to the vet and let them check things out

if you cat has long hair or if he is prone to having hangers on due to a dietary change or hair in stool that could be an answer, as well

you know your cat, so if it is abnormal take your cat to see the vet or at a minimum keep a close eye on your cat to see what other behavior changes you are seeing (perhaps frequent trips to the litter box or squatting outside the litterbox)

if caused by urinary obstruction you do need to take the cat to the vet immediately, like the 24/7 emergency vet clinic

Had a cat that would always shit outside litterbox, a few times it shit beside pillow when I was asleep, only explanations given were territorial issues, illness, litter not clean or dirty.

You are lucky there. We have lots of owls around here.

Btw, when cats pee or poop outside of the litter box, especially if clean, it is usually a medical issue (urinary tract infection if peeing outside of it) or it can be stress related. Something changed in the household to stress the cat. It can be as simple as a covered litter box (I have one that refuses to go in a covered box) or you added or removed something in it's surroundings that has spooked it. Sometimes the cat sees strange cats outside the window and that can stress the cat and cause that behavior.

I did too. She didn't like the lid on it. Then, every year I usually hatch a small batch of chicks in the basement (her territory) and that freaks her out too(hearing the chicks) and leads to the pooping outside the litter box.

A cat that pisses in your bed very likely has a medical issue. Cat likely has UTI. Very painful and they can die from it.
