Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73049824 You could easily see one from the other. They said the lava was headed in that direction. [link to www.hawaiianelectric.com (secure)] I saw somewhere else it supplies about 30% of the Island's power. In 1990, lava from a different vent on Kilauea took out Royal Gardens subdivision and Kalapana on the Big Island. So, it's happened before. Maybe this one potentially affects more people, not sure. I'm not from the Big Island, so I'm not familiar with the area. I do have family on the Big Island, but on the other side. People on other islands should be ok. For those not familiar with the geography, the Big Island is at the bottom of the island chain, it's the biggest/newest island (well, there's a newer island forming in the ocean off the Big Island) in the chain, and the island currently over the magma hot spot in the tectonic plate. All the islands have slowly moved over the hot spot at various times in history. It would suck to lose your house, but the land is cheaper around the active volcano area for a reason. |

Mandatory evacuations for the Leilani Estates subdivision have been ordered. Sorry, I just find it funny how small Hawai'i is, lots of people all know each other. I've said it before in another thread, but I had a college geology professor who said that lots of homes on the Big Island are technically in lava zones, whether they realize it or not. And again, Hawai'i volcanoes have less viscous magma, so eruptions come out more as liquid lava that runs down to the ocean. It won't be a huge, explosive ash cloud like what can happen in Indonesia. It can take out homes and subdivisions. Maybe a huge enough earthquake could trigger a local tsunami, but that hasn't happened in at least hundreds of years, and I don't know how likely that would be (probably not likely at all). |

The state is going to have to declare a state of emergency it it blows any more. There was ash falling all over Oahu on Tuesday afternoon over by the North Shore....black flakes all in the sky....that was two days ago and nobody gave a real answer why but common sense says something was burning in the air. |

Someone even predicted Kiluaea was going to erupt a few days ago. Last Edited by Ms Taco on 05/04/2018 01:43 AM |
