I'm wondering..should you or should you not give bums, panhandlers etc money?

Depends on how hungry they look I guess. One guy was holding a sign saying "hunger pain" and he looked pretty hungry and I gave him some of my groceries. But he also looked like he could work.

When I go to Roanoke, Va., there are several on the main corners off the highway. I actually saw one with their cardboard sign in one hand and talking on a cell phone with the other.

Twice and a little interactions like that people are able to get more money from panhandling than they would at a low paying job. Never give them money. Offer them food or a job. The vast majority will turn you down on both.

This is their job. The clothes they're wearing is their uniform. Many of them go home to nice houses in nice cars.

I give them a business card and tell them I'll gladly pay them to do some odds and ends work. You know how many call? Maybe one out of fifty.

Its a SCAM !!!!!! You get a scumbag that has a stable of homeless people. He puts them on street corners ( esp around highway ramps) to beg for money. At the end of the day, the Pimp comes around and picks them up and collects the money; they get drugs and a hamburger.

One of the panhandlers had the nerve to say "unfortunately, if we don't get enough money doing this, we'll have to steal it".

I usually give them cash, but i also sit and chat with them to get a feel for thier character. Also theres this one guy that sits in the same spot almost everyday panhandling and ill usually go to the dollar store and buy him and his little dog food and something to drink.

I will if they look bad off or need help. But normally don't help the ones looking for cigarette or drug money.

There are just some really pathetic ones near my work that look awful and smell awful and can barely talk. They look like zombies. I feel bad for them.

this is not a gay thread and I'm not a troll. I just have a dilemma regarding this. When I retire I'm thinking of volunteering to help these people. At least part time but I don't know if they are even help-able. By the same token I don't like being scammed

I never give them money.

There was one that was asking for beer. I gave him some beer from a half rack I had just purchased.

I appreciated his candor an honesty.

I would rather be scammed by a few than miss the opportunity to help someone that needed help.
Last night, pulling off the freeway in the Darker part of town, there was a guy at the end of the off ramp and I couldn't tell if he was white or black, but I quickly found $5 (not much, I know) for him. He seemed honestly pleased to get the money. If he was scamming, he probably wouldn't have been that impressed with only 5. He was at a bad ramp because Most of the people coming off that ramp probably wouldn't give 2 cents.
I drive a 18 year old minivan, so I know that others could afford more than $5.

I'm just a bit concerned that if I start giving regularly, I'll get mobbed on my way in and out of work everyday. I thought about putting 4 singles in my pocket and handing them out daily to the first 4 FCFS. But then again, there are so many and I don't like dealing with them in the street

I started with nothing when I was 18 and am very comfortable now. I look at some of these people and realize one wrong decision, one twist of fate, and I could be looking at myself out there.

yes or ask them do they want something to eat,
do they want to go through the supermarket/limit explained, etc.
some will and of course some won't.

I have handed out loose change before...but, my son suggested I buy one a hot drink and big Mac meal before with his pocket money :-) said "it's ok mam, they need it more than me" I felt sorry for him so went and did what he suggested...

I liked the fact he had morals and his priorities in order with having respect for people no matter their social status...

We don't have bums and panhandlers here in Sweden.

But we do have a shitload of Romanian Gypsies begging outside of every grocery store, courtesy of the Schengen agreement that allowed all EU citizens free movement across borders.

And no, I don't give them anything. I wish no-one would give them anything, because then they'd go home, but little old ladies think they're doing a good deed by donating some of their pension to Romanian criminal gangs.

Ok I will say this.

Yes I have given a lot of money to people less than me.

And some were mighty grateful.

Fuck I have even taken people under my stride and said come here mate Have a beer have a smoke and here is $20 for a feed do not let me down.

I used to keep some of those zip top cans of Pork and Beans, tuna, peaches, and a sleve of saltines or ritz crackers, in my car where I could reach them ...I was really surprised by how many "hungry people" turned my food down ... I'm not buying their drugs

Our employer hires homeless and even goes so far as to offer them food but out of about a dozen panhandlers I have approached not one has come in to interview. Most tell me they sleep at a nearby shelter and still not one.

They're all mentally disturbed hence why their families don't want them.

I'm especially sensitive to homeless vets. Many of them are mentally ill due to their service. It's just hard to know which ones are real vets and which ones are posers.
