When you're thinking, do you hear an inner voice?

I thought everyone had inner speech and heard an inner voice when they thought.

I'm very curious to know more from those who do not have that inner voice/speech...

For instance, when I write something, say even this post, I'm literally hearing the words in my head as I type them.

This doesn't happen for you?

If not, what do you experience when you write something?

What about when you read something?

Hmmm. I don't know if it's literally a voice, but, I definitely have an internal debate if it is something important.

Like 'hmmm... should I or not?' And then a 'welllll..."

But, it isn't like a recognizable voice, per se.

It sounds like somebody let the Marx brothers lose in a dark field with flashlights looking for something. Some ineffable something. Once in a while Harpo gives a toot, too.

I struggle to believe that thinking can happen without words being formed in your mind.

I would say that probably qualifies as having an inner voice... I can't imagine how one could have a debate in their mind without 'hearing' the voice.

Maybe the respondents thought the meant "voices" as in schizophrenia and lied? Fear of insanity destroys study...

Someone with a big neutral following on twitter/facebook should post this same poll..

Another possibility for why people don't hear an inner voice or have inner speech when they think is they are just so accustom to it being there...

If that's the case, I urge you all to consider what/who your thoughts "sound" like.

Is anyone speaking? Who is speaking? Just knock if you can hear me.. Is there anyone at all?

I've had ufology contact which is different than my thoughts.

I don't think in my voice, its rapid impressions, memories, retreival of info, comparisons, connections, flashes, feelings and rapid. Its non verbal and much faster than words.

I get that. When I think deeply, I hear no voice. It's more day to day average/mediocre stuff.

"I need to take out the garbage"
"I should have shut off the basement light"

Or like I said, when I write. Or when I read.

I read the article and some other things too. It seems that some people think in pictures or with their feelings. Probably liberals are examples of the above, as indeed thise types of people are not good with facts.

It is hard for me tp believe that people have no inner dialogue, but these researchers present a pretty compelling case.

My husband says he has a committee. LOL

Missed out 'sometimes'.

It all depends on what kind of thinking I am doing.

For example.... If I am calculating in maths or algebra etc...no.. but if I am checking my work yes......yes if I am typing.

I do not think GLP:ers are that representative for the general population...

yes i hear a inner voice, most of the time it sound like my own voice but sometimes it sound different.

its there pretty much all the time, specially while reading and writting.

cant believe someone can think without hearing this voice.

I actually have to talk out loud when I am exhausted and have people talking in my office. I apologize bc it sounds crazy, "this number goes here and that number goes there", but it's the only way I can hear myself think and if I get it wrong, I'm really an idiot!

We're all 'idiots'.

It's the people who think they aren't that's the issue I think

That creates an interesting question. Are there people that never get a song stuck in their head?

I remember reading something that the best way to get a song unstuck from your head is to just listen to the song. That the reason it gets stuck there in the first place is that you can't remember the rest of the song.

If you had no inner voice, or inner speech, wouldn't it then be impossible to have a song stuck in your head?

When I was little I used to be able to think abstractly without words, but once I developed language, I started thinking in words. I hated it. It felt so limiting. Gar.
