so I got a part time job at a local tax refund place. The level of fraud is crazy
I took a part time job at a local tax place (national chain company.)

My 1st shift was today and man the level of fraud people are trying is crazy.

Our place gives same day loans of someone qualifies so we are warned and had to take training classes spotting fraud. I thought the classes were BS and that no one would really try to do this stuff.
I was wrong.
I was watching a coworker take care of a woman came in with a piece of paper with some numbers on it.
She wanted to file a return for her "home babysitting business" She was single and had 3 kids of her own to file as dependents. She wanted to file head of household and claim earned income credit.

The amount she made would have qualified her for the maximum amount. She had no records of anything, when ask about expenses she was clueless, when ask about the ages of the kids she babysit she could not remember, when ask about the list of parents names and phone numbers in case of emergency she was clueless. and it only got better.

When she was told that we could not do her taxes without some type paperwork she gets all mad and loud accusing my coworker of calling her a liar. The office manger just happened to come back from lunch and tried to calm her down and told her that id she would bring in the returns from last year and if they matched her records that we would take care of her.
She lost last years returns but would go to XXXXXX where she got them done last year and bring them in tomorrow.

When she left we called XXXXXX and gave her name and description. She had done the same thing to them last year and they actually filed for her. Her return was rejected last year and she had already tried to file with them this year.

This was my 1st day and it was only a short 2 hour shift so I could get the feel of how they did things...

I have no doubt that I will have some interesting stories over the next couple months...

I will update this thread when I have something worth sharing. I will not give the name of the company though even though from what I have saw they are legit and we are told that if we do not feel comfortable with a client that we can use our discretion to refuse service.

Each preparer has to be registered and have to pass a due diligence test with the IRS and they can fine us $520 for each violation where we did not follow due diligence. One return could cost a preparer $1000's of dollars because the fine is for each instance not each return.

Welcome to the club! You will get some fantastic stories. Don’t let them burn you out. The chain one I used to work at would use people up as much as they could. I had a good manager my first year, so I had a chance to settle in and see how it went so I could protect myself from getting burned out. I have my own business now with a different type of clientele, but the few years at the chain were wild. Here’s a few of my stories. Lol.

My first fraud case was a guy with 3 kids and self employment income. They ALWAYS have 3 kids. (Max number for eitc.) He had nice round numbers written on an envelope for his expenses. I put everything in to show him, then told him that I need him to come back with actual numbers to file because I can’t use rounded numbers. Those ARE his actual numbers. Um. No. Yes they are. No one charged you sales tax on anything? Then he started screaming at me that it was my job to enter what he told me to and that I had to do it because it was his return. Nope, that’s not how it works. Thought I was going to have to call the police.

One dude was mfs and he wasn’t happy with me that he had to get the wife’s ssn. He yelled at me for a while, and I sent him away. He came back with an ssn. He expected to interrupt the client I was with and have me drop everything to take care of him. Stood over their shoulder the whole time. It was a tiny office. No privacy between the waiting area and desk anyway, but were already done with the sensitive parts anyway. I updated his return. Wouldn’t you know it. Came back later in the day as a reject. On the phone, he wanted me to just try it with the numbers switched around. Can’t do that. Find out her ssn. He came into the office to bitch me out and try to make me. Nope. I let him have his little hissy fit then told him not to bother getting the ssn because we’re done here, I’m not doing his return. Kicked him out of the office. He spent a few days complaining to my district manager. I got a call from the district manager asking me if I would complete the return now, that he’s been informed that he isn’t to talk to me the way he did and he has a real ssn now. Dude came back in like a beaten puppy. Lol. And the ssn worked that time.

Had another eitc with 3 kids and income precisely at maximum eitc who was clearly strung out on drugs the whole time. Couldn’t pay attention. Real paranoid. But she and her husband had real w2s. I went over the return and told her the refund amount and she was scheduling a meetup with her dealer before she even signed the paperwork. She came back later that day to bitch me out because she was declined for the advance. She acted like I misled her. She would have gone somewhere else if she had known she wouldn’t get the advance. The other guys gave her one last year. Two weeks later, her refund check came in and of course, most of it was withheld. She ended up getting a couple hundred instead of thousands. She was pissed! Guess what honey? I’m pissed too because my tax dollars are going to support your habit! (I didn’t say that of course.)

Good luck! I hope you find it fun. It’s easy money if you like it enough to go out on your own in the future. Learn as much as you can while you’re there. The one I was at had tons of free training I could take when it was slow. Take good care of your schedule C clients. They’ll follow you when you leave.

Taxing US citizens is a total fraud anyway. The national debt is proof of that. It is simply a way to slow down how quickly we accumulate wealth so they can keep the power.

I had a return for a lesbian couple a few years ago. They were very nice.

In some states you have to do a married return for the federal, and separate single returns for the state. It’s all about following the law. If you can’t follow the law, don’t do tax returns for payment. Cake is art. You can’t force art. I only discriminate against assholes.

Kudo's to preparers like you and D12345 from above. Most preparers would just go ahead and charge those people an exorbitant amount and go ahead and file. This even happens with major players like H and R block and Jackson Hewitt. A lot of those people trying to fraudulently file will get their money. The IRS pays out like $12 billion each year erroneously for Earned Income Credit for kids that aren't related or reside with the taxpayer, or because of made up income. But it's also the focus of most exams in the lower level exam departments...especially if they file self-employment income which gets them the maximum EIC.

Regardless, just another example of how the whole tax system is fucked from top to bottom.

How honest are you when a guy with a gun is robbing you? You have to remember that the FED gets the income tax and the whole thing is based on fraud. IIRC, there is no specific law that say citizens/sovereigns must pay income tax. It's been proven in court and there was never a law shown to make it a legit requirement. It's all based on fraud.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

They also claim dependents that are not verified as being residents, and the SS#'s used for dependents are stolen, or those of dead people. This is being done by US-citizen tax preparers, that are another layer of abuse that these undocumented people must endure. Not enough time here to explain it all, but keep digging to see the fraud, like how many of the TIN refund dollars go to the bank accounts.

For only one year ever, because I made so little I was sure we would owe. Nope. Got like a 4k "refund" from eitc. I was truly truly shocked. Like they just throw the money at you. Then I figured out the scam.
Baby mama has 7 kids from baby daddy but not married.
Baby daddy work cash job. Baby mama works menial job 4 hours a week.
Then sit back and collect the "refund". What a fucking scam.

You are only entitled to the tax money you put into the system. Below certain declared income, the Earned Income Credit kicks in, and you get into money a general fund that you did not contribute, for free. This is the beginnings of the scams. These "stupid and uneducated" people sure can find out fast how to defraud our social systems that they may not even be eligible for, our taxing system, etc. These people are being taught in an organized fashion how to commit asylum fraud, identity theft, social system fraud, healthcare fraud, and anything else with loopholes. They are instructed by US left-wing organizations, and supported by left-wing law firms who are paid by left-wing assholes like Soros. They also get the benefit of being able to tap into the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the American Civil Liberties Union, paid for again by the left-wing money people. The organizers, Pueblos Sin Fronteros, operating from headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, are right now passing out money to the caravaners from grocery bags. This is organized at a much higher level that people want to admit. These people do not walk the thousands of miles to get here, There is transportation and support along the way. The walking is used for photo ops for US media. The Mexican media is a bit more forth-coming.
