QuietObserver User ID: 77318555 United States 02/28/2019 07:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I find it interesting because the ship is named Cape Orlando which is a ship that is part of the National Defense Reserve Fleet. The fleet consists of "mothballed" ships that can be activated within twenty to one hundred twenty days to provide shipping for the United States of America during national emergencies, either military or non military, such as commercial shipping crisis. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76667912 Just curious as to why this inactive ship that is kept reserved is now here in the harbor. It was accompanied by a US Navy helicopter. Could it be getting ready to be "activated" again? Interesting. Thanks for posting QuietObserver |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 76667912 United States 02/28/2019 07:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yes I thought it was interesting too. HUGE grey ship. Wish I could post a pic but dont know how to do it here. No markings on it except the name of the ship and the home port name, other than that all grey and HUGE. A orange and white naval helipcopter flew around it while it was entering the harbor then flew off somewhere. I read up on it a little bit and they call it a roll on roll off ship " The NDRF was established under Section 11 of the Merchant Ship Sales Act of 1946 to serve as a reserve of ships for national defense and national emergencies." " On 14 September 1994, the MV Cape Orlando was chartered under long-term contract to US Department of Transportation and added to the Ready Reserve Fleet on. The ship was used during in the Iraq War and the Afghanistan war. |

Freighters/shipping ships sometimes stop in the Port Angeles harbor on their way to Seattle. For what I dont know because the Port of Port Angeles is very small. Wonder if its going to Seattle for something. I'll continue to keep a watch out on it and see what happens with it. Maybe to pick up some stuff from Seattle for U.S. military use in....Venezuela? the border maybe? Syria? Iran? China? who knows! |

tibetbill User ID: 64843537 United States 02/28/2019 07:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is a RORO. We have four of them here at all times in the Norfolk area. These ships are called ROROs which means roll on roll off. Supposedly, they can be loaded, with whatever, and put out to sea within four hours. If you have a fleet reserve ship, maybe one of the shipyards there is getting it ready for something. |

The map showed West Coast targets (East as well). Might it involve something about Russian/Chinese subs off the West Coast? Last Edited by STAX on 02/28/2019 07:27 PM |

It's a roll on , roll off ship. It's called into service when the military wants to move a lot of vehicles. Redeploying troops Bringing tanks back from overseas Delivering humanitarian aid They have been used when a ship transfers from one coast to another to bring the sailors furniture and vehicles. ( The sailor loads his vehicle with all his belongings while the spouse drives the second vehicle with the kids to the new base) |

Quoting: tibetbill 64843537 This one here parked here in the Port Angeles harbor is from Norfolk so thats interesting. I would think it would be a shipyard in Seattle or Bremerton as Port Angeles harbor is very very small. Cant think of why its parked here. Refueling for more diesal to make the rest of the way to Seattle? Im calling the Port of Port Angeles to see if they can give me info on it |

Yes it could be to ship wall parts, the Port Authority said it came from the West coast but they werent told where on the West coast so why up here near Seattle? could it be going to Seattle to get some other stuff to ship out somewhere? |
