So what's the meat situation like in your area? | |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 76696299 United States 05/23/2020 06:21 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We got notice a little over a week ago to change our packaging and thickness of cuts. Kinda like they do with potato chips and cereal , packaging less weight, because of increase in prices per pound. Quoting: MKPitBull Example , instead of reg cut of grilling steaks being 1- 11/4 in, they’re now 1/2-3/4 in. So.... also the pork and chicken we get in is frozen rock solid. Takes a day of it sitting unrefridgerated to even halfway thaw to cut it. Would explain the weird coloring of some meats aswell. If you cut it partially frozen it doesn’t bloom out well. You can’t scrape the bone dust off either. VERY interesting info. Do you think the hard-frozen storage order fulfillment will run out soon, given all the plant closings?? Not a clue. Certain poultry , pork and beef from our suppliers get sent to different stores in different areas. No matter if it’s ordered or not. And they run ads for cheap deals, we order 30 cases and get 5. Store down the road about 30 miles may get all they order on sale items, but get shorted on other stuff. I ‘ve stopped trying to figure it out cause it changes weekly. One things for sure, prices will continue to rise especially on beef. Also I’ve noticed it seems we’re getting in product from weird named suppliers, not the usual packaging. Thanks! You may be the most important poster in the thread. Any indication the beef is from Africa? |

By Thursday meat shortage in Ingles and Harris Teeter. Empty bins except for a little veal and some pork and corned beef. Overheard meat cutters saying "well, we are officially in a meat shortage". to each other. Very good report. Thanks. |
Pilgrim001 User ID: 78018011 United States 05/23/2020 06:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The meat shelves and other shelves through out my local WM are getting bare. They packed some pork products into the beef area, there was NO regular hamburger, only grassfed beef burger and Bison burger, both at higher prices. The last time I was there, there were only small pks of ground beef, no large packages. The chicken and pork shelves were sparse. There are shortages all through the store. I was able to buy some frozen hamburger pattys (that nobody wants). Even so, I still easily went over the $100 mark. I recently went over the $200 mark, so I'm getting used to it. I cook nearly everything we (3-4 people) eat, no pre-prepared food. Inflation big time. There are 3 of us, but there is a friend that is normally here, so he eats too. Little Rock. Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 76696299 United States 05/23/2020 06:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So Cal here. Meat has gone up in prices a lot. Beef is no less than $7/lb. Other cuts are 8.99 and up/lb. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78576165 Chicken 1.99/lb (breast) but other parts that would go for .99/lb are now 1.79-1.89/lb (dark meats) Pork are over $3/lb and up depends on cuts. Lots of stock but people are not biting. Some trays of meat are going on quick sale prices but yet still sitting there. I've not touched any meat as I stocked up before the "shortage." People are definitely not affording these ridiculous prices. Hmmm...That IS weird. I would have thought people would pay almost any price for decent meat. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 76696299 United States 05/23/2020 06:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Southeast Missouri reporting. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78811053 Cheap low quality beef is around 6 dollars a pound even at Walmart, the good stuff is nearing 10. Very little in the coolers, the shelves are thin in product, and massive bare spots throughout the store, even in drygoods, etc. It's clear that the supply chain from China is drying up. There was no butter to be found yesterday at the Walmart other than imperial stick butter. With the holiday weekend, nothing will be left come Monday. Lowe's has been out of any affordable lumber for two weeks now locally, with signs posted about a supply chain disruption. It's looking more and more like the collapse of the Soviet Union looked. It's becoming more and more obvious by the week. Very good report! Thanks!! |

Katipo2017 User ID: 69294962 New Zealand 05/23/2020 06:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We still have a shitload of prime grass fed beef here. Might be $35/kg but the quality can't be beaten. Quoting: Katipo2017 What were your prices for that same stuff there in NZ, pre-covid? Slightly less as I recall but I am not complaining. That steak I had this week was delicious. Any sarcasm in this post is purely intentional. |

Plenty of beef, steak, roasts and chicken where I live. What about prices? Four big Ribeye family pack was 18-20 dollars. 4.97 a lb, Memorial Day sale King Soopers, Colorado Thanks. That would be a STEAL here in Maine right now. But, I suppose, that you have great prices on fish and lobster. I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you. Slake Blake |

Crunch62 User ID: 68347671 United States 05/23/2020 07:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Oroville, CA. No shortages really, but prices are high. Ribeye, T-bone etc., near $15/lb. Even cheap cuts are near $10/lb. A whole chicken, about $12. An average-sized Tri-Tip is about $25. Lamb seems to be a steal. I bought a package of 2 large lamb chops for less than the price of a cheap steak. I know of one store that has the good grassfed lean ground beef for $4.99/lb, when it is $7.99 everywhere else. I usually shop there first. I've been married so long, I don't even look both ways when I cross the street. |

Kid from Akron User ID: 77009661 United States 05/23/2020 08:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Northeast Ohio, shopping one every two weeks and running through the store like Carl Lewis. Went early yesterday: 80% lean ground beef at $6.99/pound (filled freezer at $1.99/pound just before the media picked up on the closures thanks to GLP) Beef tenderloin at $16.99/pound (stocked up at $8.99 6 weeks ago) Bacon at $5.39/pound (stocked up at $.99 2 months ago) Everything has gone up substantially, and lots of unfamiliar brands on the shelves. I was happy to be buying fresh veggies, bread, and milk etc. |
