Quoting: shovelbum I'm not asking, just pointing out the lunacy of the financial system. you're writing/selling a contract (not the actual stock) giving another person the "option" to buy at an agreed upon price at the end of an agreed upon period of time, say 45 days. When you write/sell the contract you collect a premium up front, but, it's not technically yours at this time. If the contract expires in 45 days and is not favorable to the person who bought it, it will expire worthless to them, so, they will choose not to exercise their "option" to buy. You, however, then get to keep the entire premium. If it expires favorable to them, you still keep the entire premium, however, you now have to go in to the market to buy at the current level and sell it to them to fulfill your obligation. You will likely lose $$$$ because you will be having to buy at the current level which is significantly higher than what you agreed to sell it at. And since each contract is for 100 shares a stock, you can see how bad this could get if you wrote/sold just one contract. Most traders sell 10+ contracts at at time on just a million dollar account. this is too brief an explanation as there are 4 directions/positions this could go depending on if you are selling sells, selling buys, buying buys or buying sells. it's a mind game for sure. Good explanation. But is it morally right if it influences the true price discovery? |
