'There's some anxiety': Alberta health minister and family swarmed on Canada Day

CALGARY — Protesters surrounded Alberta's health minister, his wife and two young sons Thursday at the conclusion of a Canada Day parade and a celebration of the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions.

Tyler Shandro's wife Andrea was in tears and the minister held one of his sons close, putting his hands over his ears while a handful of protesters screamed profanities and insults.

"Lock Shandro up," yelled one man.

"You've destroyed thousands and thousands of Alberta lives," said another.

The abuse was directed at Shandro's sons as well.

"Sorry buddy but your father is a war criminal."

Shandro eventually handed his children over the chain link fence to onlookers.

Premier Doug Ford’s office said a man allegedly equipped with a large butcher knife showed up outside his Etobicoke home and was arrested by an Ontario Provincial Police officer.

Ivana Yelich, Ford’s director of media relations, told Global News the man was allegedly yelling threats Monday night.

Yelich also said an OPP officer was on-site nearby and arrested the man a short time later.

“The premier thanks the officer for his quick action and bravery, which resulted in no harm to anyone involved in the incident,” she said in a statement.

Ford’s house has been the site of protests before. In late November, Ford commented that “every single day” there were protesters outside his home — calling them “buffoons.”

Well maybe all the health officials shouldn't have given themselves raises during a pandemic while people were losing their jobs from the policies they were mandating, while claiming "we are in this together" for a year+.

All for me, and none for thee.

Alberta plans to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to about 15,000 workers at meat-packing plants across the province starting this week, provincial Health Minister Tyler Shandro said Monday.

Earlier this month, the Alberta government said it would open vaccination clinics at some of the 136 meat-packing plants in the province as early as April 20, starting with a pilot project at a Cargill operation near High River.

Thomas Hesse, president of UFCW 401, said the vast majority of workers the union represents want to be vaccinated — and he hopes this move helps with restoring trust in the health-care system.

"This is a way for workers to take control of their own destiny, to make their own individual choice about vaccination, provide themselves with some protection. But it's only one piece of the puzzle. We can't vaccinate our way out of this. We still need safe workplaces," he said.

COVID-19 vaccines for Albertans 75 and older will be offered at community pharmacies starting in the first week of March, said Health Minister Tyler Shandro.

“As soon as we have supply and processes in place, we plan to expand the pharmacy program to help us get doses in the arms of every Albertan,” said Shandro.
