It's full of absolute psychos hiding in the trees. even the people who own legit homes and land are totally batshit crazy. Plus the whole place is cliffs and steep ravines. There is no flat ground, so if you go off the trails or roads, you can slip and nobody will ever find you. No cell service.

Lived and worked there in the mid 90's. Lived in Miranda, and Weott. Worked in Piercy, at the Hartsook Inn. Was a good time.

Southern Humboldt is crazier than northern. Can take cops 11/2 hours to get to Shelter Cove. Guy bleed out waiting for the cops to show so EMTs could go in, after being shot.

Weed capitol of the world. When I was there in 2009 the federal gov estimated the GDP of the Emerald Triangle weed, which includes Humboldt/Mendocino/Trinity counties, to be in the range of $30 Billion.

It's changed a lot since then. Cali started medical marijuana in 1996 and after a few years the Emerald Triangle became a refuge for every grower in the country. We all flocked there because it was a safe place to be a grower.

...because it was a safe place to be a grower. Sort of. It was safe because you could be a needle in a haystack. There were waves of three letter enforcement that would sweep through, but they usually went after large operations that spanned multiple locations with a lot of people involved. You pretty much had to be a very big player or incredibly stupid to get busted.

So it was safe from the cops, but craziness that happens in a place where the vast majority of the people are into some sort of counterculture lifestyle and every drug known to man is readily available all the time is another story.

There were two broad categories, the weed/psychedelics and the all drugs all the time, aka thug, types. The weed types were mostly harmless. The all drugs all the time types, who are much more numerous, give the place a generally elevated level of mayhem all the time.

And then there are the zombie meth heads; they're just precious and they're everywhere. They make some of the most unexpectedly psycho crazy how the fuck did you arrive at that choice kinds of choices imaginable.

So security is a major priority. People guard their territory with vigilance. I knew of a guy who ran the sec for an old southern Humboldt family. He would place home made claymores around the perimeter of the property to keep people out.

The major weed producers up there have huge amount of seasonal work and the place is overrun with homeless migrant labor in the fall every year.

Lots of money, lots of drugs, lots of random homeless migrant labor and lost people on the lost coast and the rugged mountains make the place exceedingly dangerous.

It's not a place to go for a Sunday drive through the country because you're likely to roll up on some stuff that you're not supposed to see and then you become a liability.

People disappear all the time.
