Re: Use every method you can to save money on groceries
I save a lot by gardening.

I also bake our bread, which costs maybe 35 cents per loaf to make and it tastes better than store bread too.

Same with desserts. We don't buy chips ahoy or Sara lee. I make it all from scratch and I make sure we always have some sort of baked treat available.

Great thread for ideas!

Pure garbage, Headless Dancer. Humans aren't meant to eat so many carbs, certainly NOT grains! The only carbs fit for human consumption are FRUITS!

The garbage they tell you about fructose is shit. Humans can't digest grains. I know I can't. You think you can now? You'll pay later.

Enjoy your cheapskate food, pay Big Pharma later cos dumbfucks like you never use natural medicine.

I can't "grow" my own food: I'd have to raise it. You can't do that in a studio middle of a skyscraper in NYC! Not that's where I live but it had to be said to counteract GLP parroted stupidity!

Sour grapes much?

We do those things too plus we have chickens and fruit trees. And if you are baking bread and snacks it does not mean you are eating too much of these items. It's better to have some clean treats on hand then to be craving Debbie snacks. Or a ten dollar cupcake.

Juan Star for yet another asshole reply. Listen cupcake: I'll deliver the punching retorts around here! Don't even try it: you're way too obese!

Grains are NOT fit for human consumption! EVER. You want treats, eat fruit. If you need to be "bad", then make your own ice cream. Grain-free, of course!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 81889087

Obese?? I am far from obese. I have a cute little figure for an old woman with a small dress size. Only Me is a former ballerina who, if I remember correctly, has survived very serious health problems.

The fact that she is still with us tells me she is taking good care of herself, including what she eats.

You have no idea how hard homesteaders work on their homesteads. It's morning till after dark when the warmer weather comes. Not only are we tilling, weeding, watering, organizing, but canning, tending the chickens and cleaning their coop. It's endless. No time to be obese.

Maybe you should get out of the city and find a real life.

I use Publix mostly because it is near my home. I load up on their BOGO's for future use. I don't buy anything there that is not on sale or closeout.

They have Wolf chili for $1.20 a can right now. That is a great deal. I wanted to buy it all but always leave some behind for the next person.

Yes!

The most impactful way to save money on groceries is to learn how to cook.

The second is to learn how to garden.

Just knowing how to cook and bake from scratch is probably a 4-5x cost savings, if you were to eat the boxed/frozen versions of each meal.

I make soups a lot. Very cheap, quick and easy. You can make meals out of left overs and scraps. And stores easily in the freezer in portions.

Also delicious.

I never take the last items as well. It makes for good food karma.

Last night in the grocery store I was shopping in there was an inadvertent sale on boneless chicken breast for .99 a pound.

This is what I look for when I shop. You have to be open to new possibilities. That is why it is important to learn to cook from scratch. Then any sales or markdowns are valuable.
Last week I found packages of boneless pork spareribs for 1.99 marked down from 6.75. I bought two. In the freezer they went. Perfect for stir fries.

The deals are out there. You just have to look carefully.

You hate the light because it shows your sins. I get that.
 Quoting:

Thank you! You made my day! hf

As far as grocery tips go. Find a senior and shop on senior discount days. Most big food stores, Kroger’s, Safeways and such, have 10% off on Senior shopping days. Go with a parent or give a ride to an elderly friend for the exchange of 10% off their Senior status.

Always asks for discounts at food counters, “Have you any discounts?” “Do you give discounts to military or seniors? Find out if they have discounts and what their policy is. I got 10% off Panda Express after she told me no they don’t do discounts. “ I said, well, I thought I’d just ask because you never know.” And she said! “Well I’m going to give you 10% off today.” I was amazed and had no idea they could randomly give discounts. So always ask and be polite about it and say thank you!

Make your own bread. It isn’t hard once you get the hang of it. Much better and cheaper top.

I recently bought my favorite Anasazi beans from the Colorado grower. The would have cost me double if I had got them from some unknown seller on Amazon and I would have gotten less beans from Amazon. I used to be able to buy these beans in the stores but no more.

Make sure anything you order online isn’t being gigantically marked up by a secondary seller. Try to buy DIRECT from a website or phone.

When there is a sale, try to buy many if you can do that and save for later on.

Grow micro greens and grow lettuce at home. Anything you grow yourself will be better and less expensive.

Regrow your vegetables! Can you do this? Yes, you sure can. I’m regrowing lettuce for another use in a fish bowl on the table. Buy your food and regrow it. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to regrow kitchen scraps.

Re: Use every method you can to save money on groceries
The post regarding learning to cook and garden is spot on. I started learning to cook about 6 months ago. I make a lot of Italian, Mediterranean, and vegetarian dishes. Pretty much every day I am cooking onions, garlic, and a wide variety of spices for most dishes. I also make a lot of soup, especially various chili recipes.

Surprisingly, there are a ton of recipes that are vegetarian that are really delicious. You just have to know where to look online, or buy cook books that specialize in this kind of cooking.

I have this past month or so started to cook a lot with beans of all kinds - kidney beans, pinto beans, etc. The other night I made Ultimate Veggie Burgers from a recipe book from America's Test Kitchen, and you couldn't tell that there was no meat in these burgers.

We've been able to keep our costs down by switching towards eating more vegetables and beans, and eating meat only 1-2 times per week. Beans are cheap, but if you know how to cook them with the right spices, you can make some really good meals. Some books to consider, web sites:

Italian Cooking for Dummies
Any books by America's Test Kitchen - Mediterranean, Vegetarian books are excellent
Web site for The Bean Institute
Blue Zone books - Many have recipes

Recipe!

I found one !

Vegetarian Black Bean Burger. Now you can make the recipe at home!

TIPS: The black bean mixture needs to be refrigerated for at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours prior to cooking. When forming the patties, it is important to pack them firmly together. Our favorite canned black beans are Bush’s Best. Serve the burgers with your favorite toppings or with our Chipotle Mayonnaise.

INGREDIENTS:
2 (15-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed 2 large eggs
2 tablespoons all-purpose our
4 scallions, minced
3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro 2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 ounce tortilla chips, crushed coarse (1/2 cup)
8 teaspoons vegetable oil
6 hamburger buns

DIRECTIONS:
1. Line rimmed baking sheet with triple layer of paper towels and spread beans over towels. Let stand for 15 minutes.
2. Whisk eggs and our together in large bowl until uniform paste forms. Stir in scallions; cilantro; garlic; cumin; hot sauce, if using; coriander; salt; and pepper until well combined.
3. Process tortilla chips in food processor until finely ground, about 30 seconds. Add black beans and pulse until beans are roughly broken down, about 5 pulses. Transfer black bean mixture to bowl with egg mixture and mix until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours.
4. Adjust oven rack to middle position and heat oven to 200 degrees. Divide bean mixture into
6 equal portions. Firmly pack each portion into tight ball, then flatten to 31⁄2-inch-diameter patty. (Patties can be wrapped individually in plastic wrap, placed in a zipper-lock bag, and frozen for up to 2 weeks. Thaw patties before cooking.)
5. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat until shimmering. Carefully place 3 patties in skillet and cook until bottoms are well browned and crisp, about 5 minutes. Flip patties, add 2 teaspoons oil, and cook second side until well browned and crisp, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer burgers to wire rack set in rimmed baking sheet and place in oven to keep warm. Repeat with remaining 3 patties and 4 teaspoons oil. Transfer burgers to buns and serve.

We're making an effort not to throw food away. Our fresh produce would often go bad before we had a chance to eat all of it. One thing that helps is to display the produce in a pretty way on a platter on the counter instead of hiding it away. That way we can see how much we have and don't buy more until we need it.

Also, we're cooking less food. For instance cook 1/2 package of pasta instead of the entire box.

And started making cookies from scratch in small batches.

I buy high end coffee, but stopped treating myself to Starbucks, because I make better lattes at home now. Still expensive, but much cheaper than Starbucks and higher quality milk and coffee.

Actually, I rarely eat out anymore.

I don't mind paying more for food if I enjoy the taste and I don't throw it away.

I don't know where that box came from.

I bought a Betty Crocker Pizza Oven and it is the best thing ever. It grills and bakes at the same time. I use it for pancakes, grilled sandwiches and burgers, etc. (I buy the Original Garden Burgers in bulk from restaurant suppliers on Amazon because they are no longer sold in stores.) The Betty Crocker Pizza Oven is super easy and cooks much more quickly and is a cinch to clean up. For me, the idea of pre-heating an oven to bake a dozen cookies never seemed worth it.

Have had veggie burgers in Vegas restaurants. NOT the fake meat, mostly oil & processed garbage kind.

Trick is to add a lot of top quality condiments & sharp cheddar cheese after the veggie burgers are cooked. Delicious

Find meat on sale and can it. Even tough cuts of beef are super tender once canned.

If you are afraid of canning with the conventional canner, there are now electric models that are safe and easy to use.

I bought 50 lbs of beef yesterday on sale and am canning it all up now. A pint jar holds approximately 1 lb of meat.

It's really easy to cold pack meat and can it.

I wonder when there will be threads about forming intentional communities (google this - there are international directories). There are many kinds, from very small to very large, from very traditional values to very liberal, etc. But usually they will feature some form of communal raising of poultry, livestock, and crops. Some welcome seniors, others not so much. Same with children. Some require financial stability & contributions, some are rudimentary. It's worth the time to take a look at this.
