girl lost her left little finger when it was bitten by a horse
HORSE BITE: A 7-year-old Battle Creek girl lost her left little finger when it was bitten by a horse.

Battle Creek Police Department Animal Control Officers said the girl, who shows horses in 4-H, was saddling the horse about 12:37 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 22000 block of Hutchinson Road when the animal turned and bit her.

Officers said the girl was saddling the horse and handing a blanket to her grandmother when the horse turned and bit the little girl.

The grandmother, 62, thought the girl had been bitten in the palm of the hand until she noticed the finger on the ground.

The girl was taken to Battle Creek Health System for treatment and the horse was placed in quarantine for 30 days.

My dad was telling me about this. He said when they got the little girl home, the mother fell and broke her shoulder. They had to turn around and go right back to the hospital. Now that's bad luck!

Equines can do damage.

Recently in our community, a young boy was out walking his dog and he saw a donkey in a field. He crawled through the fence to pet it and the donkey grabbed him by the hair shook him, and threw him down and stomped him for good measure.

The donkey partially scalped him and roughed him up very badly. The boy escaped only after he pretended to be dead and the donkey wandered off.

People should always take care with large animals. My cows are tame but the bull calf could do me harm even at his young age--I do not turn my back on them.

P.S.--Laughing at others pain reveals much about a person's true nature.

As I have been saying the animals will become enraged, aggressive, as thought they are 'possessed-it will increase-and PLEASE pay attention to your pets-this will become more of a problem-as the magnetics continue becoming more whack...it is deeper than that but beware, it will increase and wild animals will start to venture into the cities more. Watch them closely for indications they are going to higher ground or evacuating a particular area-if you see that-go where they are going-as in the tsunami of Indonesia there were no animals reported but plenty of dead folks.

The elephants left in the days before it hit-

Also this girl was in 4H and she is not going to mistreat the animal or be intimidated by it-

SOMEONE else is likely tormenting it...

Sometimes I think, that animals--just like us--have bad moods and bad days.

The horse also might have an underlying irritation or injury that the girl isn't aware of, and one effective way of showing that is by biting.

Hard to say. The horse might not have meant to do such damage, either. A little finger on a girl is a delicate thing.

(ChildofAfrica--sometimes we do laugh at terrible things even when we are horrified, that is true, it can be uncontrollable.

I DO know people, however, who laugh at other's misfortune and pain just because they think it is funny. There is something very, very wrong with those people.

It is good to know you are the former, and not the latter, in this instance hf )

Re: girl lost her left little finger when it was bitten by a horse
Horses are dangerous to be around. Everyone who has been around them knows that. Stuff happens, not much you can do about it. No one was "tormenting the horse".

The main thing is, people get hurt around horses, but it doesn't stop them! They keep coming back for more, because they love horses and love working with them, even though they might get stomped on, kicked, thrown off, bitten, etc. etc. etc.

It's not really a "shocking" news story, just a sad fact. Sorry it happened to this little 7 year old girl, but I bet it doesn't stop her. And I don't assume the horse was "vicious". Horses can be very nervous and get spooked by things we don't even notice. Also, maybe some part of the equipment was fitting badly - it could be anything.

When I was a kid lots of people had horses, even in their back yards, the kids rode bareback with no lessons or supervision. Everyone is so overprotected these days.

I can't imagine why they "quarantined" the horse. Wonder how much that costs and who is paying for it.

A member of my family had the tip of a finger bitten off by a horse, has had his feet stomped on by horses, many people have been kicked by horses, and I know of one who died from being kicked in the stomach.

Must of been something in tha blanket to cause tha horse to bite or the little girl was carrying a bad spirit/attitude or thoughts. Horses are extremely telepathic and self centered.

Probably because they are concerned about rabies. Any mammal can contract rabies.

The horse may be only confined to the property of the owner for a period of 30 to 90 days--they will do that for dogs accused of biting someone.

It doesn't have to be at a special place.

Donkeys are very territorial and protective. They will go for anything they consider a threat. They can kill dogs, coyotes, or any creature that comes in their area. They view things in their area as predators. The same donkeys would have probably been really sweet, if the little boy had been with the donkey owners, and not had the dog with him. Sad.

Not to worry, surgeons are good at this. She will be stitched back up in no time, and her young age actually will help in restoring the hand to near invisible damage when she is a teenager.

She will however have some emotional scarring, but that too can be dealt with without any problem.

Unfortunate accident, the horse should be put down because it cannot be trusted anymore.

 Quoting: Eden

Why would you kill the horse for doing what horses do? Horses bite when they play. They bite at flies. Because people are ignorant of their behavior, doesn't make the horse bad.

Many people suffer bites or the loss of the tips of their fingers, from feeding an apple with their fingers wrapped around it, instead of offering it in an open hand. The horse doesn't intentionally bit the finger. He is taking a bite of apple.

A woman lost her nose because she taught her horse to "kiss." A teenage girl was nearly killed because she made a game of "tag" with her horse. Common sense goes a long way.

It's not known what happened in that particular situation, but chances are, proper training for the little girl, teaching the nip and kick zone, and teaching her how to avoid and/or correct bad behavior, teaching her to pay constant attention, could have prevented it.

Unless the horses is intentionally mean, which is doubtful, for a child so young to be handling it, there is no more reason to kill the horse than there is to kill the child or parent for their ignorance.
