Simple physics -- you don't set off your explosion in a small walled compartment. A lot of the bomb's energy would be expended blowing the walls away, but that wouldn't affect the aircraft's airworthiness.

So you come back to your seat and sit next to the fuselage. too, let's say your home-made bomb doesn't rupture the airframe (you haven't tested this, you know). But if you're sitting in a crowd, the effect is nearly as catastrophic.

Like a hole in the plane isn't enough and sitting in your seat in full view of other passengers while trying to light a bomb ensures unhappy seatmates.
