Let's look at Canada from the perspective of a wolf.

The USA is wise enough to know the proper use of a barrier country or nation. But what if the USA were to become crippled? Or desperate for resources?

A chain is also only as strong as it's weakest link. Being a border country to the United States, Canada has certain concerns, lets examine some of them. For purposes of discourse, let's say that Winnipeg were destroyed to the point of non functionality.

Now Winnipeg is a central city of the "Nation" of Canada. A major rail hub and agricultural center. A loss of this city would almost certainly cut the country in half. At least geographically.

Let's look at a few facts about Winnipeg, and contrast them with a city I find very similar, having lived in both.

Now Oklahoma gets almost no notice in the USA. Very few people have been to Oklahoma, even fewer can name the states it borders. Probably more Canadians can name the fifty states than Americans though. Something I have witnessed firsthand.

OKC is much like Winnipeg. Built on the same type of soil in the same relative location to it's country. Has many of the same industries, and even similar population. In Canada however, a large number of the population have been to Winnipeg or know much about it. In the USA, many have no idea OKC even exists.

Winnipeg, according to Wikipedia, got it's start way back in the 18th century. OKC has only been cranking along since the end of the 19th. I lived myself in a house in Winnipeg that was as old or older than most of the cities in Oklahoma. The rent did not reflect this reality though...

Winnipeggers are isolated by location and climate. People in OKC are more isolated by financial circumstances. In a place like Winnipeg, everybody knows the name of the family who owns the local Great Canadian Superstore. In OKC, people know the name of the local newcaster who always predicts the killer tornados.

If OKC were to be wiped off the map, and whether by massive f5 tornadoes or terrorist bombing, such attempts have been made, the USA wouldn't really notice.

A few telecom companies would have to lay new groundwork. Oil would be pumped in from Alberta until Texas could lay new pipework, or tankers could again pass on the highways. The population itself numbers from the Oklahoma Land Run and are already latecomers to the arena, by national terms.

But what if Canada were to lose Winnipeg. What then?

Suddenly air traffic would be trans continental across Canada. The beef market would take a hit, food prices would rise sharply. Train and semi traffic would suffer massively, with no central stopover and hub. OKC could be routed around, Winnipeg would leave a troublesome scar.

Winnipeg has an airport that actually does a fair amount of business. And it is actually an airhub. Most of the similar traffic in the USA is handled by DFW, a huge airport by any standard. Takes fifteen minutes just to ride the tram from one gate to another.

But Canada has no such backup plan. No surrounding infrastructure. With the loss of Winnipeg, a minor city by USA standards, the rest of the country curls up like a severed earthworm.

What could happen to Winnipeg? In a major war, it is almost certainly toast. It would either be destroyed prior to becoming a staging area by invasion over the polar caps, or destroyed so that it couldn't be used as a staging area by North American defenders. It is also in a flood plain, and with enough climate altering, could be both flooded and swamped by tornadoes. If not altogether starved out by deep freezing.

The USA could stand the loss of OKC rather easily, but the loss of Winnipeg would be downright disastrous for Canada.

And what if Vancouver were to get that long overdue EQ at the same time? How many people who are made rich by the flyover areas of Canada, spend their time on the balmy west coast?

Now OKC is inhabited by people who are very militarized and very military friendly. Winnipeg is inhabited by old licentious drunks. I am understating the case in both examples.

Many people in Winnipeg have travelled to a several places worldwide, and only a couple, if any in the USA. And those are usually right across the border. They feel that they are the exotic foreigners when they travel.

People in OKC are usually of two types. Born and bred there, having maybe visited a neighboring state. And those that are there for business. Having traveled all over the USA, and oftentimes a few places worldwide.

They don't think of themselves as exotic travelers, they think of themselves as businessmen.

If a disaster were to occur in OKC, half of the people would see it as a holiday. The other half would call upon corporate assets from all directions to rebuild their interests. And as the infrastructure typically dates from this century, and all they have is wide open spaces and temperate weather, it would be accomplished shortly.

Counter that to Winnipeg, with it's aging infrastructure, pride of it's inconsequential history, and tightly packed city, and realize that there are two land avenues of entrance and egress. Realize that Canadians are the very best at denial.

Well in Winnipeg, there is no higher calling than wealth. Having been all over North America myself, I have never seen a place, barring NYC and a few other coastal areas that have a lot of things going for them, such a sense of entitlement.

This entitlement is always based on literally being the "only game in town". When your nearest major city is in another country and is Fargo ND, it can be quite easy to assume you are some sort of God or Goddess. Indeed, black magic is a large part of the Manitoba underground.

Winnipeg could be bought for flattery and economic persuasion. Especially if the big money producing families there were headed south anyway. Manitoba is sort of a breadbasket, and even as such, the prices on groceries are monopolized. The transportation industry allows this. It would be very easy to starve the city and pick it up for pennies on the dollar. Their current monopoly is already based on this model.

OKC? It has been starving from the get-go. The miltary and prison industries reap that harvest.
