Re: low rumble in the sky - OC
I have heard it twice starting about 2 weeks ago. The more recent time was two days ago and the sound was more encompassing and lasted longer and was of course more disconcerting.

There was no way what I heard was thunder or a plane or machinery or a vehicle or train nearby.

The sound seemed to emanate upward from the earth while at the SAME time emanating from above ground in the lowest portion of the atmosphere.

I did not like hearing this sound. It most definitely got my attention as "something I had never heard before".

It was a strange sound; an unusual sound. It left you wondering what horrific thing would happen next.

You were left knowing that nothing good could come from that sound.

I am fully confident that given enough time, the import of the sound will become clear to all of us...and it isn't going to be pretty.

Re: low rumble in the sky - OC
Also in Western Maryland
I live along a flight path and also have a camp 15 miles west along the same flight path. I first herd a very deep rumble at camp 3 weeks ago around 10pm did not sound like any plane I have ever herd and there was nothing visible. I have been noticing this rumble noise almost every night sometime between 10 and 11 pm. Herd it earlier tonight and looked online to see if anyone else has...Sounds like a very so moving train with no track noise. But is definitely coming from above

WHOA !! We in west side of DFW metroplex in Texas (area far west side of Ft Worth) had similar type experience about a week ago about 5:30 AM CDT that day ,, don't recall which day it was.
Quoting: DFW REPORT - TEXAS 1001236

I also live in DFW (Euless) and I heard this about what would have been a month-ish ago. I mentioned to my roommate that the sky was loud today and he went out for a cigarette and came back in and said, "Wow. You weren't kidding." I didn't make the correlation so he had to go on to tell me he was talking about the sky. He said he had never heard anything like it and was trying to explain it away all day.
It lasted for the greater part of the morning I think, but I've come to ignore it. I've heard it before more than once throughout my childhood here (NRH) and never thought it was something natural, but I didn't think of it as being unusual either. I've always referred to it as the sky being loud.
I only googled it just now because I heard it for about four minutes a little while ago and I happened to have internet in front of me.
It would not surprise me at all if there were something more behind it. It's one of those things you've noticed, questioned, and promptly forgotten.

It reminds me of something else.

I remember growing up we always used to go to this park called Bear Creek and as you'd walk through it there were pastures among the trees. There was a large, cupping wall in the most profilic pasture that blocked out what laid beyond it on the right side. There were no signs or markings. This wall must have been two or three stories tall. It wasn't brick or anything that I would have dreamed of climbing on.
I was young and my parents didn't know what it was so I decided it must a place they had rodeos or perhaps it was used as a sort of colisieum. It was there probably more than twelve years.
So one day I was on a date and we went for a walk in the park and he insinuated that it was probably there to hide something. That NEVER dawned on me at all in all of those years. I forgot about it and months later remembered it and went out there with my best friend to find it gone. All that you can view from there now is a single house past where the structure once was. It doesn't look out of place but neither does it seem a suitable place for it.
The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps there was an oil well back there, but those are rather tall and I've never seen such a tall wall built around one. Perhaps they were going to build something there, but there's no evidence of that or any foundation laid. It seems like its only conceivable purpose was ruining the scenery. It really makes me wonder.

Its cloudy out, might rain.. so I cant see past the clouds, but I just got out of my car to go inside of my house, and I heard a low rumble in the sky.. It sounded like a faint jet sound or a constant thunder sound... except it wasnt leaving the area.. I heard it just sitting up there for about 10 min.

Heard this too yesterday off and on in the early evening. In MA. Thought it might be a plane or a jet but it didn't " pass by" like sound from a plane does. It seemed to be in one central place, yet no where in particular, if that makes sense. I have also heard this sound eminating from the sky on a clear day and seen no planes or jets or anything. It's odd but I have no idea what it could be

Re: low rumble in the sky - OC
Another thing to consider - trains!

Trains would match most of the time durations you've all given. Especially the 5 to 10 minute ones.

I live about a mile from the train tracks - and you would think that would be enough of a distance to not ever one. But...get a stiff wind blowing out of the north, and they may as well be rolling down my street. They've even made my house vibrate. Besides the wind, there's also geography. My house is kind of in a little bowl - and sound echo's all around it during the 4th of July, just like the fireworks are being shot off at the corner park...but the closest one is actually 4 or miles away but we've gotten sound from as far as 15 miles out. So, the train sounds are just blown into this bowl and reverb around a bit.

So, I'd look at a map and look at the wind direction and see if a train is possible. Also go over in your mind what you heard - trains have a rhythm. And now that it could be trains - do you remember hearing the rhythm?

Re: low rumble in the sky - OC
I live in SF Bay Area. First noticed this in July, initially thought it to be Black Project Aircraft. The sound seemed to eminate from the west, and the weird part was that it didnt seem to move or fade, just rumble for 15-20 seconds and then disappear. If it were an aircraft I would expect the noise to taper off but it just stopped abruptly. Recently however i've been suspecting that this noise may have more to do with some sort of process down below than anything going on above. That's because since around the middle of November that noise has been accompanied by what I can only describe as a quiver, of the ground. Nothing like an earthquake it's like the groung itself is shivering. I've been wondering lately if this has anything to do with the Ring of Fire's recent uptick in activity, being that the San Andreas is only 10 miles west of where I live. Does anyone have a clue as to what's the cause of this?

I heard it just now from Tampa, Florida. Palm Harbor, Florida to be exact. It sounded like a rumble in the sky. It is a clear night, no thunderstorms at all, there were planes off to my left flying into Clearwater airport but that wasn't the sound I heard. It sounded like rumbling thunder, drums, fireworks but not crackling, sounded also like a gunshot or bomb but wasn't. I have never ever heard this sound and the consistency was so strange!!! Has anyone heard this tonight or know what it could be? I am about 100 miles from Cape Canaveral and 20 or so from MacDille Airforce Base. However it sounded more of a rumbling thunder and not anything plane related.

Re: low rumble in the sky - OC
Eats Texas hear, have heard this sound from time to time for the past ten years. There is a place in my house where you can stand and hear it very clearly, it's like the structure is vibrating because it's coupled to the ground and that is where the sound is actually coming from IMHO. It DOES seem like it's coming from the sky, but I think that may be a product of our own imagination because it does sound like a squadron of turboprops.
