Food Stamps eligibility requires you HAVE A JOB, yes you read that right....
My mother was talking to a neighbor who went to see if
why she gets some food stamps but her son doesn't, he lives
with her and is 20 and goes to college( scholarship ) but is
not eligible.

Supposedly now if you're a son or relative of a person in
food stamp program then other things apply,
unless you have a job( part time/full, it must be 20 hours
atleast) you do not get food stamps support.

Does that make any sense?, why would you need food stamps
support if you got a job?, isn't food stamps for people who
do not have a job and need food to live?.

Maybe they want to make sure your not sitting at home collecting all sorts of checks from different agencies : unemployeement, disability, SS, welfare, etc.

Someone working 20 hours a week at minimum cannot support a family very well. So they need help

Most people I know with food stamps have jobs, but they are part-time jobs and aren't enough to make ends meet without additional help. Those are no full-time jobs available.

The mom is on SSI and she gets some food stamp support but

she wanted to know why her son who is in school doesn't

get any, that's when they told her he needed to have a job

and go to school at the same time to receive support.

She didn't understand why he needed a job, if he had a job

he wouldn't be asking for food stamps, I think food stamps

should be given to anybody who doesn't have a job NOT to

those that have a job, they got money to buy food unlike

a jobless person.

You don't have to have a job if you are on social security or are applying for social security. I know I am on food stamps (The whole $95 a month) and because I get social security I don't have to get job. I am disabled...my neighbor though does drugs and she keeps trying to get social security (Been denied 4 times) but because she keeps in the system trying to get on social security she gets housing and food stamps and does NOT work!

are they 20 years old???, I am assuming they would give

support to a mother or somebody older because they can

understand why they would need the support

But if you're young and can move around, they want you to

get a job and earn the food stamps, which sounds odd

because if I the person has a job they don't need the

support like a person who doesn't have a job.

The son is probably registered as a dependent for the parents food stamps...In which case that individual would not qualify for food stamps because they are already technically recieving them. The only way to get out of that dependency rating is for the son to obtain employment enough to prove that they are not in fact dependent and are trying to support themselves (the 20 hr/wk job).

If the parent were to cancel their food stamps, and then reapply without listing the son as a dependent, then the son would be able to get food stamps just fine. The parent would get less per month too.

In my state it's $200/month single-no deps, 300 married - no deps, 300 single - 1 dep (100/mo each additional dep). So, the mother could theoretically be recieving 400/mo in food stamps.

In short....the parent here kinda made things harder for their kid by registering their kid as a dependent. While the individual does get more food stamps on their individual card, still the sum total of stamps recieved is less than if two people were on individual stamps. It makes one card look big while actually gibing the family less per month than they could otherwise get.

Here are the rules for students:

There are special rules that apply to college students who between 8 and 50 years old. A student who is attending college part- or full-time must meet specific rules to be eligible for SNAP/Food Stamps:

If you are 18-49, and meet one of the following:

* Get federal or state work-study monies, or
* Work 20 hours or more per week, or
* Have a child under the age of 12 in the home (further rules apply), or
* Take part in an education or job training program operated by the government, or
* Are disabled and receive a disability based benefit.
