SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

We've gone from zero sunspots to four ARs now. The newest arrival is AR2564 which I believe was responsible for the flares I noticed on the far side. It appears to be decaying now, but I wouldn't rule out another strong flare.

Solar Activity 24 hr Summary...

Solar activity was at low levels during the period due to an isolated C2
flare at 08/0056 UTC from new Region 2564 (N10E79, Hsx/alpha) which
rotated around the NE limb. Slight growth was observed in Regions 2561
(S16W59, Cro/beta) and 2562 (S06E59, Cao/beta). No Earth-directed CMEs
were observed.

China Completes Construction of the World's Largest Radio Telescope-

China finished constructing the world's largest radio telescope to hunt for signs of alien life in deep space.

The Five-hundred-meter Single-Aperture Radio Telescope, or FAST, contains 4,450 reflector panels with a diameter of 500 yards and is 30 football fields, according to the Xinhua news agency. (snip)

A total of 9,110 residents were relocated in 2009 to four settlements at the government's expense "to create a sound electromagnetic wave environment," Xinhua reported citing provincial officials. They were also were given $1,800 in compensation. Ethnic minority households facing housing difficulties were given another $1,500.

No residents will live within 3 miles of the telescope. Three hills around the depression formed an equilateral triangle.

The previous largest single aperture telescope in the world was at Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory with a diameter of 328 yards.

Sunscreen and sombrero sales must be robust there! Spaceweather forecasters would be both exalted and scorned, haha.

A big HOWDY to ArunaLuna and Zacksavage! Great to see some old friends are still out there. When the sunspots disappear for ten days, so do most of the posters, LOL. Solar minimum shouldn't be until 2019-2020; so we should see some intermittent activity over the next year. Hang in there folks.

New Sunspots / Storm Watch Continues
Good evening. Minor geomagnetic storming was observed during the past 24 hours as a high speed solar wind stream remains geoeffective. Isolated periods of storming will remain possible during the next 48-72 hours.

Solar flare activity remains at lower levels, although an increase may be possible with the addition of region 2564, now turning into view off the east limb. Stay tuned for the latest update. Attached image below courtesy of SDO/HMI.

RADIO BEAMS FROM JUPITER HIT EARTH: Yesterday, a series of narrow radio beams from Jupiter reached Earth ... but they weren't from NASA's Juno spacecraft. They came from Jupiter itself. Natural radio lasers in Jupiter's magnetosphere send shortwave signals into space and occasionally they sweep past Earth. "I picked them up in broad daylight," says Thomas Ashcraft, who operates an amateur radio telescope in rural New Mexico.

Each pop and click is the sound of a single beam washing over our planet. "The interesting thing to me," says Ashcraft, "is that unbeknownst to us Jupiter radio beams are often sweeping over us, actually washing over our bodies if we are outside at the time."

The lasers are powered, in part, by electrical currents flowing between Jupiter's upper atmosphere and the volcanic moon Io. When the geometry is just right, and Earth is in line with the beams, they are easily detected by ham radio antennas on Earth. Jovian "S-bursts" (short bursts) and "L-bursts" (long bursts) mimic the sounds of woodpeckers, whales, and waves crashing on the beach.

For this project I asked all soloists to come up with their own version of their solos. Each part was scored to the singers maximum vocal range. All performers were ages 11 to 15 at the time of recording.

AR2564 has decayed further today producing only a B9 flare. A large alpha spot has rotated Earth-side and has been numbered 2565.

Howdy, my friend Those are small flakes of debris that come off of the spacecraft's thermal blankets from time to time. When they fly in front of the coronagraph's lens they clutter up the image with specks and trails. These space probes are constantly bombarded with sub-atomic particles, solar winds and micro-meteors (space dust). We've seen this type of effect in the images many times before. Both STEREO and SOHO images suffer these image anomalies occasionally.

NASA Releases First JUNO Image of Jupiter!

Boy, what a disappointment! What are they using--a cheap dash-cam from Singapore or a modified cell phone camera? I've seen much sharper images in a modest backyard telescope right here on Earth. I've recently seen 2 moons around Jupiter with 12x BINOCULARS! I hope they're just tweaking us---a billion dollars should provide us with a better view, donchya think.
