SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

Hiya, NIN, we have 3 newly-numbered regions:

#1326 in the northwest trailing 1319.

#1327-a rapidly growing group of spots in the southern hemisphere near mid-disk.

#1328 in the northeast quadrant just ahead of 1324.

Can anyone tell me why a couple of the spots start with an "s" and the rest all are strictly numerical? Is there something different about the ones that start with 's'?

I'm not sure, hopefully someone has a definitive answer, but I theorize that the "S" stands for Southern hemisphere and the number means it was formerly seen on the last rotation. Just my guess...however S1279 is now active region 1327. I notice SIDC in Belgium uses a different numeration system with color-coding-so it may be an in-house designation peculiar to Solen.info.

I've been waiting for updates, but there may have been a sizable CME triggered by this flare (not the large farside one). Look at the 8 o'clock position on STEREO A.

Don't look now but there's another monster sunspot coming over the eastern limb. And 1327 in the south is growing like a mushroom. Be sure to click for zoom on this hi-resolution HMI image.

the area on the solar disk you see that start with an "S" are regions that have not yet produced a sunspot, but are regions to watch for the production of a sunspot
they are numbered once they produce a sunspot within the region
and, we should keep in mind that there has been Flares from un-numbered regions in the past
:)

I was wrong about the "S", but right about the rest. Solen.info is a private Solar report hosted by Jan Alvestad. His website says "Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count" and "data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots." and "numbers in the...active region map are historic SWPC/USAF numbers." So "S" stands for Solen or STAR or Spot-and is his own designation for un-numbered regions/spots. Mr. Alvestad does a marvelous and thorough job keeping track of this info. I suggest NASA put him in charge of SOHO, lol. Check out his homepage:

going back 26 days, we come to the date of Sept 25th
look on spaceweather and go to the archives for that date, and we see this

that new sunspot we can see in your image that will be rotating our direction is likely old region 1305 that was much smaller during it's last rotation and did produce a few decent sized flares then

its hard to remember everything
especially with the news overload syndrome most of us suffer from
but if we try hard to remember all that we have learned on this thread from the time it was created
we will see that collectively, on this thread, along with Gabe's and ElQ's threads, we have all already found the connections to all these events
it's just a mater of putting it all together

look at the dates we had all the last mass flare activity
then cross that with what was the pinned threads on glp then, and with what quakes we had then, and with what other interesting news was being talked about then

It's true. We have learned a lot here. It is and was what I was looking for.

That's why I love this thread. We have connected the dots.

You are clearly on to something,...you and your sun-kindred here in this thread have done a phenomenal job at extrapolating pertinent data into something understandable,...and quite exciting for the layman/woman.

You do all those a great service who do not have the time or perhaps wits to put it all together like you do.

But we all have our little specialties to share:)

the sun-jupiter alignments:

there was Jupiter aligned with Earth & the Sun on Feb 27th, 2010 when the Chilean Earthquake occurred

The 8.8 magnitude February 27, 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami cost 525 lives

there was Jupiter aligned with the Sun and Saturn on March 11th 2011

thats when we saw the 9.0 quake in japan
no need to add info for this one as we all know to well the info

it is interesting to see where that 2 large bodies, Jupiter and Saturn were during those dates
