Where are the CMEs originating from if not flares ? Good work, TS66. I noticed the filament in the Southern Hemisphere has lifted off recently. Here's how it looked yesterday: [link to halpha.nso.edu] And here's a movie loop of it lifting off. Also, notice another large filament on the eastern limb stretching N to S. You can also see some of those C-flares popping off all over the place. [link to halpha.nso.edu] SOHO Cor 2 shows a CME from the eastern limb region. [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 5554653 United States 11/17/2011 02:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This Long Duration Event C-flare has been erupting for an hour now. SDO/AIA hasn't updated for 4 hours and SOHO is a few hours tardy as well. It's a good thing we still have Earth-based telescopes, LOL. It's hard to be sure, but it looks like the new active region just south of the filament on the eastern limb. (why don't they freakin' number them as soon as they become visible?-sheesh) This is most likely associated with a CME eruption. EVE doesn't show a definitive x-ray signature but the east limb is lit up good. Here's a recent H-aplpha image from Big Bear: [link to halpha.nso.edu] |

Could be interesting. None of these recent CMEs will have any impact on Earth save for one coming tomorrow. They've all been at 90 degree angles from us, either on the west limb or east limb. Of course a filament eruption may change that. It's frustrating that all four major solar spacecraft missions are not updating well today. I see SOHO is starting to update but it's still 3 hours behind "real-time". SOHO or SDO should shed some light on this LDE which is beginning to fade after 2 hour eruption. The only image close to real-time I can find is the GONG Network (which isn't that great for CMEs) or this solar X-ray from GOES 15: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 5554653 United States 11/17/2011 05:38 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not Earth-directed IMO, but we have to confirm when STEREO A & B update. It's unusual for SDO and STEREO to be so far behind real-time. Hell, even SOHO got the drop on 'em this time. Maybe the Deep Space Communication network is busy with all those spy satellites or maybe they rented it out to the Chinese Space program, LOL. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] |

Hugh M Eye User ID: 5591236 United States 11/17/2011 10:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The large CME seemed to come from another giant sunspot just over the east limb. Data has been extremely retarded today-STEREO A has been out of action more than 10 hours. STEREO B has begun updating but there's a gap of 7 hours. SOHO will post an image or two and then disappear for a few more hours. So bear with me as I try to sort things out. Oh, there's also been another CME on the backside. Here's some pretty pictures from SDO--zoom to the eastern equatorial zone. The images are from the middle of the Long Duration Event: [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Very intense flaring and magnetic loops visible. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] SDO's patented 3-wave blend...Mmmmm. [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Poor recent image from STEREO B (sorry, not much to choose from) shows the BIG CME toward the lower right and the backside CME to the upper left. Some of this material may head to Earth after all, but it's difficult to tell from one photo. [link to stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov] Recent update from SOHO Cor 3 showing both CMEs: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Will search for more data/images...stay tuned. |
Hugh M Eye User ID: 5591236 United States 11/17/2011 10:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I feel like I'm on a boat in choppy seas when I see all the long roiling waves on that chart, LOL. Old Sol's gotta rhythm going now. There was a small CME we missed earlier with all the data problems. I believe this was from that southern filament liftoff. This one may be Earth-directed--it's at 5 o'clock position on the SOHO Cor 2: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] Same position much later on Cor 3: [link to sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov] SEEDS movie was made before SOHO updated the missing images. Hugh M Eye User ID: 5591236 United States 11/18/2011 12:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We have two new "officially numbered" regions. The small spot(s) near the eastern equator is AR11353 and the large, dangerous-looking region near the southeastern limb is AR11354. Coming up behind 1353 is a very active region which has been launching all the east-side CMEs. It's just now peeking over the limb and I can't wait to see this monster better. Let's jump the gun and call it 1355. [link to sidc.oma.be] [link to sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov] |
