An active sunspot is amping up the sun's activity, and has already unleashed two strong solar flares that triggered weekend geomagnetic storms on Earth, NASA officials say.

The M-class solar flares set off two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that erupted from the sun on last Wednesday and Thursday (June 13 and June 14).

The first flare peaked Wednesday at 9:17 a.m. EDT (1317 GMT), and lasted for three hours, NASA scientists said. The resulting CME was hurled into space directly toward Earth, but was not expected to carry serious effects for the planet because it was traveling at a relatively slow speed.

The second solar flare peaked on June 14 at 10:08 a.m. EDT (1408 GMT), and was also considered a long-duration event, agency officials said.

NASA also released a video of the M-class solar flare on June 14 as it was observed by the sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory.



Both CMEs from last week crashed into Earth's protective magnetic bubble, called the magnetosphere, on Saturday (June 16), sparking geomagnetic storms and intensifying aurora displays on the planet. [Solar Flares: A User's Guide (Infographic)]

Stunning northern lights were seen at lower latitudes than normal over the weekend, in some cases as low as Iowa, Nebraska and Maryland, NASA officials said.

CMEs are clouds of plasma released by solar flares into space that are sometimes aimed directly at Earth. These ejections are made up of charged particles that, in severe cases, can damage satellites, endanger astronauts in orbit and interfere with power and communications infrastructure on Earth.

The two solar flares originated from an active region on the sun that has been dubbed AR 1504. This hotspot of solar activity rotated to face Earth on the left side of the sun on June 10.

No major interferences were reported from this weekend's geomagnetic storms, but AR 1504 still poses a threat, according to an update from the Space Weather Prediction Center, which is jointly managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Weather Service.

"The latest geomagnetic storm appears to be winding down, with the last period of G1 (Minor) activity coming late last night EDT," officials at the Space Weather Prediction Center said. "Solar Radiation Storm levels have returned to background levels after the small S1 (Minor) storm observed on June 16. No further activity is currently expected, but Region 1504 is still present and harbors a slight chance for subsequent activity."

X-class solar flares are the strongest type of solar eruptions, with M-class flares ranking as medium-strength, and C-class flares representing the weakest type.

The sun's activity waxes and wanes on a roughly 11-year space weather cycle. The sun's current cycle, called Solar Cycle 24, began in 2008 and the star's activity is expected to ramp up toward a solar maximum in 2013.

The Slooh Space Camera will be broadcasting a special live solar show on Wednesday (June 20) at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT) to examine recent solar activity and to celebrate the summer solstice, the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

is something going on with the magnetic fields today ???

i'm feeling really weird

hit me about mid morning, a very electrical feeling (almost felt like I could feel it in my teeth)...nervous system feels shot...I know flares can have an effect our nervous system, but activity doesn't seem to have increased...could be energy from something besides the Sun!

Typical MSM reporting AFTER the fact, keeping the masses clueless.

I had a look for you and it appears our Field in general is pretty sound with little Magnetoquakeing [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] but as you can see from that graph we were hit hard and when it comes to any induced feelings of discomfort that we can possibly attribute to Solar Events the effects should lag a little behind the instance of arrival.

You may be Electro-sensitive [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] you can see that we had a Electron Fraggle associated with the combined OommffF of a double/triple CME/Flare event,the overall Electron count is now relatively high,high enough for NOAA to issue a 2MeV alert:

There is an accepted(more or less)knowledge that some People are more prone to bouts of sickness or Psychological upsets due to Geo-magnetic Storms,though I would'nt jump to the conclusion and say that your feeling strange is Solar related in as much as I could say it definately is'nt.

When I have personally had feelings of being unwell or feeling particularly strange that I have attributed to Solar Events,the most common would be a feeling of extreme light-headedness/dizziness and/or a feeling of overall foreboding/anxiety or manic happiness

Great reply! Thanks for the info! I have felt off as well, but I have known I was super sensitive to some things for a while...I had not checked that chart in a while seems like its been at a steady pace for a while.

The Global Coherence Initiative has some great info on earth changes/solar changes and health along with some other things relating to global "emotion" as well :)

It could be,it could also be the Moon or a little of both!

The Moon more so if you happened to be Female,as you would know..if you were Female.

Have you found a correlation in the past with such feelings and Solar Events/Electron Flux?

What about the proton density graph on spaceweather.com, its been at or near zero all day. I've not ever noticed that before. Also given soooooo many people are reporting energy in their bodies issues it does raise a few questions for me about what may be going on. Also, someone, not sure who correlates EQs with a drop in the proton count and given the big EQs today, while the density is at zero I think there may be something to it. Any thoughts anyone?

I am not too sure about Proton/Earthquake relation(not to say there is none)but if I were to feel I could definitely(err,almost)say must be a Space related link and causation affect for Earthquakes it would have to be Geo-magnetic and Gravitational Flexing of the Core/Mantle and Crust..perhaps that is too obvious a point to make but,oh well : )

I view the Uni-verse as a whole as described by its' Name and all events there-in related in some way,no matter how small the role played I believe everything can affect everything else and everything is *everything* no matter how hard and long we may continue to divide one(or the whole)into forever smaller and smaller pieces in an attempt to find and draw some correlation between a,b and c etc.

I don't mean to sound like I do not think it important to categorize and become familiar with the different expressions within each apparent single Body - i.e A Planet and it's constituents and the Laws that govern that Bodies motions,the problem I feel with the use and pracice of Science these Days is the total over-indulgence of this Compulsive Disorder and it's longing to find a answer to the Macro through the Micro alone instead of looking up,away from the notes and equations,to see the common recurrence and Pattern of what I deem to be the 'One True Force',Electromagnetism.

All other Forces are to me just different expressions of the 'One True Force' through a modulating Frequency.

Who the Modulator is or whether there needs for one is another very long diatribe

it passed at around 19:00 last night. i'm sensitive to astrology and solar events and would say that what i was feeling/experiencing was similar to a very strong geomagnetic storm, and of course there wasn't one. so quite perplexed as to what caused it. was feelings of frustration as well and a foreboding that something was going to happen quite strange.

before geomagnetic storms would floor me i would actually have to lay on the floor and wait till they passed. this progressed to an enjoyment and excitment of geomagnetic storms and i could ride them easier and have a tingly body sensation my head would feel like it was been 'scrambled' (sounds bad but as a tee-totaler is quite enjoyable)

i'm male and if it was the moon i would be suprised as it is the first time i had felt that way at a new moon and is for me quite an unsusal seensation for a new moon.

lol there has not been much activity recently...I keep thinking one is 'right around the corner'...but it has been pretty slow besides the few Mclass ones...guess we just have to be patient! Not that I particularly wish for solar doom...just leads for some cool discussions sometimes!

Well, SS 1507 was responsible for the last C flare, and that is rotating out with 1504 and 1508, the last of the active regions. Unless SS 1510 starts gain some umph we are looking at a very quiet period until 1497 rotates back around from the west.

Update on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer(AMS-2) installed atop the ISS-

"This unique exploration investigation seeks to understand fundamental issues shared by physics, astrophysics and cosmology on the origin and structure of the universe, possibly even identifying a new form of matter.

In an interview, Trent Martin, NASA's Johnson Space Center Project Manager for the AMS aboard the station, stated the AMS detectors collect and measure data at a rate of seven gigabits per second. This is like filling a one-gigabyte USB memory stick every second!

"The AMS was essentially designed to probe the foundations of the universe," Martin said."With accurate data, we hope to be able to potentially redefine what we know as high energy physics today."

During the interview, Martin shared details about the spectrometer, his background, and answered several questions posted to the AMS Twitter account. Cosmic radiation is a significant obstacle to a manned space flight to Mars, and accurate measurements of the cosmic ray environment are needed to plan appropriate countermeasures.

The AMS is measuring almost double the amount researchers expected, at a rate of about 1.2 billion particles per month. The particle count is always available on the AMS website."
