I didn't realize we were at an 8,000 year high for SS. I thought we were up the last 700 years since the last little ice age,but thats remarkable for advanced man, probably not so much for mother earth

I remember my first physics class the instructor placed a basketball in the Gym and a piece of buckshot 80' away to show the size scale,I was amazed and still am when viewing the size and density of certain CME's

The delta region is magnetically mingling or starting to. With all the lateral growth thats recently taken place this guys got bad intention written all over it.

Not thinking any X-flare types popping off anymore is such a good thing to look forward to. AR1520 is turning into a monster. I wonder if ss are like earthquakes, if they don't left off a little steam, it's gonna blow!!

It takes that configuration to start the churning , so to speak. Polarity and magnetic configurations such as BGD are pretty rare, when present they usually produce. Rare like an F5 tornado, but different in direction and response. Somethings gonna happen just not sure if we get to take part. Lets hope for the best, I mean so much more by that than the literal overtone!I want to evolve as a race and I believe events need to take place, but want the transition to be easy and safe for most! Can't have your cake and eat it too!!!!!!

Do sun spots loop around ? Why do they keep naming them incrementally...

We sure are Shad....the heppening are too hard to ignore! No fear...what happens..happens and overcome and adapt!

It's just a tradition I think. Before we had satellites and fancy cameras, astronomers just peered through a telescope and drew a sketch of what they saw. Galileo eventually went blind from looking at the Sun w/o solar filters. SIDC still does a daily sketch of sunspot configurations. Quaint, ain't it?

It looks like the umbra of the largest spot has indeed divided into two positive-polarity regions. If these two spots continue to move apart and grow I expect to see some violent flaring in the next 36-48 hours (or less). I'm only basing this on what we saw with 1515 which pulled a similar trick and all hell broke loose afterwards with dozens of M-flares. We may not see as many flares, but they could be 10x more powerful. I think it depends how much the negative-polarity regions can keep up the pace....just speculating-this is my first solar max, too.

In this HMI Magnetogram, the positive (north) polarity is blue/green and the negative (south) is red/yellow.
