that main leading spot is spliting and becoming way more complex
big flare on the way if this keeps up

Our agent program "SPIDER" connects to the SDO website every two minutes to search for the new HMI images and download them to our server.

These images are then processed using "ASAP" to automatically detect, group and then classify the sunspot groups and calculate their flaring probabilities."

so as the sunspot regions change from minute to minute, their flare model reads the SDO image and assigns a flare probability based on the complexity of each sunspot
if the sunspot becomes more complex, the cances of X or M go up, depending on how complex it becomes
if the sunspot decays, the % of flares goes down

Hiya, NIN, it's great to be so excited over a sunspot again, haha. This thing is getting big and ugly...at least the leading spots. Every time I look at it, it's bigger and uglier! What do you make of the trailing spot having a reversed polarity? It's seeming calm and just along for the ride. Here's a recent snapshot-

How can it have reversed polarity, I thought they all lead with red in the North?

my grandparents have pacemakers. is there anything I could do to protect them from a flare?

The real question is whether 1654 will follow the many, many other sunspots and start to decay as it gets closer to facing us?

It's almost as if all the energy is being sucked in on the eastern edge to build and release the energy as it rotates around the far side with little left once it gets to our side.
