I did but I've had to scour the thread trying to figure out the difference between the two charts - or are they measuring the same kind of protons?

PS words can't even express how much I
appreciate all the contributors of this thread! Thank you from the bottom of my heart - you've helped me so much over the past year on this awesome journey - knowing/feeling our connection with the Sun and cosmic weather but pining to know why and how!

Peace and love everyone!! :)

Nin, or anyone...any idea what the average number of high energy proton events is per year? Is there a chart/link anywhere. By the way, it is GORGEOUS out there today, slight overcast so I can actually sit in the sun, lowish temps, nice breeze, perfect start to summer.

Edit: answered my own question, its 0-8 per solar cycle

omnidirectional
fluence exceeding 6 x 109 cm-2 are very rare.
However, the number of very large fluence solar proton
events per solar cycle is extremely variable, ranging from 0 to
8 per solar cycle.
[link to hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov]

Now, the question is, how many proton events have we had this year and this solar cycle?

This link lists two big ones for 2012 but they don't indicate the >MeV they are using to determine them, just how much ozone got depleted.
[link to onlinelibrary.wiley.com]

Found this chart, have to get familiar with it.

Howdy, Sol1d Int3lhi , thanks for asking. Now I'm only an amateur observer, so any physics majors out there want to chime in, please feel free to do so. YES, the the two spacecraft have different detectors and each has a unique location for sampling the solar protons. The ACE probe actually has two different proton plots, a low energy (EPAMp) and a high-energy (SIS); and it's location about a million miles sunward of Earth lets it sample the solar wind and transient event protons before they reach Earth.

ACE data plot menu: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

GOES, on the other hand, is situated in geosynchronous orbit around Earth and is normally inside the Magnetosphere. GOES detects the higher energy protons which have managed to penetrate the magnetosphere. As you can see, the 3-colored lines represent a different energy level and often only the red one moves. Recently the red line has passed the "event threshold" and a NOAA Alert has been issued-
Space Weather Message Code: ALTPX1
Serial Number: 302
Issue Time: 2013 Jun 23 2026 UTC

ALERT: Proton Event 10MeV Integral Flux exceeded 10pfu
Begin Time: 2013 Jun 23 2010 UTC
NOAA Scale: S1 - Minor
Potential Impacts: Radio - Minor impacts on polar HF (high frequency) radio propagation resulting in fades at lower frequencies.

GOES Proton Flux plot:
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

Also a spaceweather warning-

Space Weather Message Code: WARK04
Serial Number: 2112
Issue Time: 2013 Jun 23 2248 UTC

WARNING: Geomagnetic K-index of 4 expected
Valid From: 2013 Jun 23 2250 UTC
Valid To: 2013 Jun 24 0700 UTC
Warning Condition: Onset

Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 65 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Weak power grid fluctuations can occur.
Aurora - Aurora may be visible at high latitudes such as Canada and Alaska.

NOAA Discussion and Recap-
Solar Activity .24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was at moderate levels for the past 24 hours. The
largest event of the period was an impulsive M2/1n flare from Region
1778 (S16E61, Cao/beta) at 23/2056 UTC. Minor lower frequency radio
emissions were observed with this event. SDO/AIA 304 imagery observed
material movement off the SE limb originating from the vicinity of the
flare. Additional imagery was not available at the time of this report
to determine any Earth-directed CME component with this event.
Regions
1774 (S17W50, Hrx/alpha) and 1778 showed minor growth while the other
regions on the disk were either stable or decaying.

Energetic Particle-24 hr Summary..

The greater than 10 MeV proton flux at geosynchronous orbit reached S1
(Minor) solar radiation storm levels
at 23/2010 UTC with a maximum of 11
pfu reached at 23/2350 UTC. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at
geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels throughout the
period and reached a maximum flux of 1610 pfu at 23/1915 UTC.

Solar Wind-24 hr Summary...

Solar wind parameters, measured at ACE, were indicative of continued
coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) and CME effects. Solar wind
speed was initially steady near 625 km/s and increased to around 773
km/s at 23/0400 UTC with arrival of the 21 Jun CME. After the initial
shock, wind speed gradually tapered off to end-of-period values around
575 km/s.
The interplanetary magnetic field Bt values ranged from 3 nT
to 8 nT while the Bz component ranged from +7 nT to -8 nT. The phi
angle remained in a predominately negative (toward) sector throughout
the period.
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

WOW, I didn't even know a CME arrival was expected today.
