Simple27 User ID: 48123712 United States 04/19/2017 05:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | SPECTACULAR CME: Old sunspot AR2644 has returned--and it is still active. On April 18th at approximately 2000 UT, the sunspot's magnetic canopy exploded and hurled a bright coronal mass ejection (CME) into space. This CME will probably miss Earth. The explosion's epicenter was too far off the Sun-Earth line for a direct hit. However, NOAA analysts are still evaluating the possibility of a glancing blow. Region 2651 (N13E57, Dao/Beta) was the sole numbered active region with spots, though remained largely inactive. The long duration C5 flare occurred at 18/1921 UTC was determined to have an associated CME, though model output suggests a trajectory clearly off the Sun-Earth line. SOHO/LASCO C3 animation of CME: [link to www.spaceweather.com] .Forecast... Solar activity is expected to be very low with a chance for C-class flare activity and a slight chance for an M-class flare (R1-R2) over the next three days (20-22 Apr). GPS/GNSS operators should also expect issues near the dawn-dusk terminators. We also have 2 coronal holes sending us fast wind and that means storm conditions are great for aurora! In 1993, monitoring by ground-based radar showed there to be around 8,000 manmade objects in orbit that were larger than 10 centimetres (4.5 inches) across, a size big enough to inflict catastrophic damage, said Holger Krag, in charge of ESA's space debris office. "Today, we find in space roughly 5,000 objects with sizes larger than 1 metre (3.25 feet), roughly 20,000 objects with sizes over 10 centimetres... and 750,000 'flying bullets' of around one centimetre (half an inch)," he said. "For objects larger than one millimetre (0.04 inch), 150 million is our model estimate for that." Risks of collision are statistically remote, but rise as litter increases and more satellites are deployed. full report here: [link to www.yahoo.com (secure)] The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. ~ Thomas Jefferson, Inaugural Address, 1801 It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death. In 2011, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope became the first Earth-based telescope to snap an image of the auroras on Uranus. In 2012 and 2014 a team led by an astronomer from Paris Observatory took a second look at the auroras using the ultraviolet capabilities of the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) installed on Hubble. They tracked the interplanetary shocks caused by two powerful bursts of solar wind traveling from the sun to Uranus, then used Hubble to capture their effect on Uranus' auroras - and found themselves observing the most intense auroras ever seen on the planet. more here: [link to www.spacedaily.com] The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. ~ Thomas Jefferson, Inaugural Address, 1801 It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death. The Planetary Defense Coordination Office brings in the U.S. Air Force and Department of Defense, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to initiate discussions about what can be done and prepare the public messaging. Even though much of the public will already know—with all observational data available online and a world of amateurs connected to social media, there’s no hiding an asteroid with a diameter six times that of the one that exploded over Chelyabinsk. There’s no hope of deflecting or destroying the asteroid—that would not only take more notice, but would also require technology that doesn’t exist yet. And there’s still only a 2% chance it will hit Earth anyway. But in doomsday exercises, asteroids don’t glide safely past. With more observations, the small chance of the asteroid hitting Earth is recalculated as an all-but-certainty. When it’s clear the asteroid’s headed for the west coast of the US, NASA loops in the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), which is surprised to discover there’s nothing America’s space administration can do to protect them, even with years of notice. “I was thinking very simplistically, ‘can’t you just nuke the thing to change its path by a degree?’” says Dan Bout, assistant director for response at Cal OES, about his response to the bad news in the doomsday exercise. The physicists told him “No, that’s not something we can do right now.” Very interesting and in-depth report here: [link to www.defenseone.com] The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. ~ Thomas Jefferson, Inaugural Address, 1801 It is not only vain, but wicked, in a legislator to frame laws in opposition to the laws of nature, and to arm them with the terrors of death.
