Radiation was spiking hundreds of kilometers away to levels that were not even near Fukushima reactor just after explosion. Unusual things were only that cars were washing everything: roads, sideways, etc. Public parade during these days was held, everyone outside and counted, who is participating, who is not (bad thing). Only when radiation was detected in other countries, radio from USA announced this.

It was illegal to listen to it by the way. Radioactive food was not destroyed, it was consumed. Families were separated from their kids during evacuation. You may want to look what happened to kids after separation. You won't find any list as up until now it is a secret, but you may find really chilling stories.
Chernobyl is not buried. There were steps taken to seal and stop chain reaction, due to fears of nuclear explosion.

In reality it was not needed and failed as concrete missed reactor. Then there were fears of ongoing reaction with lots of heat like in Fukushima. Tunnel was dug below reactor to cool it with liquid nitrogen, but fuel melted through concrete and cooled off. It was no longer needed. Top soil was removed, chemicals were sprayed, reducing radioactivity by 50 times near reactor. Red forest buried in trenches. It was called red not only due to coloration, it was shining red at night from radioactivity as witnesses recall. Trenches had no hydro-isolation, radioactive elements up until now go right into groundwater from there. But it can be understood as radiation was so high, that it was priority to reduce it by any means as fast as possible, people were dying from it. Fuel in Chernobyl is still there, in some places even exposed to water. Problem not solved.
Burring is not a solution as reactors or pools are active. Only one solution exists, removal of radioactive fuel or if it is melted, to add something that would stop reaction and form stable mold.
