Mmm... there are no safe levels...

Fukushima thyroid exposure at "safe levels"

Japanese researchers say residents of Fukushima Prefecture were not exposed to levels of radiation that would damage their thyroid glands.

The researchers at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences explained the results of their study at a symposium in Tokyo on Sunday.

The impact of radioactive iodine on the thyroid gland is difficult to detect as the substance dissipates quickly.

The internationally permissible level is 50 millisieverts.

Workers at Fukushima Daiichi drill new hole in torus of Unit 2 for survey

On Sunday and Monday, workers at Fukushima Daiichi carried out operations at the Unit 2 reactor to drill a new penetration on the first floor to insert a dosimeter, thermometer, and camera.  The perforation was drilled in the RHR heat exchanger area on the north side of the reactor building.

U.S. To Bury Almost All Existing Nuclear Waste; Recycling Deferred At Least 20 Years

There’s little hope that the 70,000 metric tons of used nuclear fuel dispersed across the United States will ever be recycled, according to a recent study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory—so nearly all existing waste will go into the earth.

In a study completed late last year, Oak Ridge officials determined that the U.S. is at least 20 years away from large-scale reprocessing of used nuclear fuel, if it decides to pursue such technologies. By then, they estimate, nuclear plants will have generated another 40,000 metric tons of spent fuel.

The total amounts of radioactively contaminated materials in forests in Fukushima, Japan
There has been leakage of radioactive materials from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. A heavily contaminated area (≥ 134, 137Cs 1000 kBq m−2) has been identified in the area northwest of the plant.

The majority of the land in the contaminated area is forest. Here we report the amounts of biomass, litter (small organic matter on the surface of the soil), coarse woody litter, and soil in the contaminated forest area.

The estimated overall volume and weight were 33 Mm3 (branches, leaves, litter, and coarse woody litter are not included) and 21 Tg (dry matter), respectively.

Our results suggest that removing litter is an efficient method of decontamination. However, litter is being continuously decomposed, and contaminated leaves will continue to fall on the soil surface for several years; hence, the litter should be removed promptly but continuously before more radioactive elements are transferred into the soil.

A massive earthquake occurred in eastern Japan on March 11, 2011, and a very large earthquake-induced tsunami washed over the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The damage to the cooling system of the power plant resulted in several explosions. Radioactive materials leaked as a result of the explosions and the ventilation intended to avoid further explosions.

Radioactive contamination has been widely but inhomogeneously found in eastern Japan, even in areas hundreds of kilometres away from the plant1, 2, 3, 4. Airborne surveys revealed that the contamination spread widely, but areas northwest of the plant, from the immediate vicinity of the plant to approximately 60 km away, were found to be notably heavily contaminated (e.g. ≥ 134, 137Cs 1000 kBq m−2)1, 2.

The two major radioactive elements found to be widely deposited are iodine (131I) and cesium (primarily 134Cs and 137Cs). Because the half-lives of 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs are 8 days, 2 years, and 30 years, respectively, the decontamination of cesium (especially 137Cs) is now the crucial issue.

The majority of the land in the contaminated area is forest. Forest ecosystems consist of tree biomass (aboveground: boles, branches, and leaves;
belowground: roots), small dead organic matter on the soil surface (termed litter), dead trees on the soil surface (termed coarse woody litter), and soil.

Litter includes fallen dead leaves and branches and their decomposed materials. Usually, several centimetres of litter cover the surface of the soil, whereas coarse woody litter is very sporadically distributed on the surface. Two independent, preliminary surveys conducted by the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute and Forestry Agency of Japan (FFPRI and FAJ) and by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) revealed that radioactive materials primarily remain in the aboveground tree biomass, litter, and shallow soil (0–0.05 m) in forests5, 6. Removing the contaminated components is a potential method of decontamination for forest ecosystems7, 8, 9.

Although the amounts of contaminated forest components are unknown, this information is essential to reveal the extent of the contamination by this tragic, historic nuclear accident and guide decontamination efforts. Here we have estimated the volume and weight of contaminated forest components in the contaminated forest area by combining forest statistics, databases of the distributions of vegetation and soil types, and compilations of data from Japan's forests.

Indoor air quality, air exchange rates, and radioactivity in new built temporary houses following the Great East Japan Earthquake in Minamisoma, Fukushima
The present study measured air exchange rates, indoor concentrations of aldehydes and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and radioactivity levels at 19 temporary houses in different temporary housing estate constructed in Minamisoma City following the Great East Japan Earthquake. The 19 surveyed houses represented all of the companies assigned to construct temporary houses in that Minamisoma City.

Data were collected shortly after construction and before occupation, from August 2011 to January 2012. Mean air exchange rates in the temporary houses were 0.28 /h, with no variation according to housing types and construction date. Mean indoor concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, toluene, ethylbenzene, m/p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, p-dichlorobenzene, tetradecane, and total VOCs (TVOCs) were 29.2, 72.7, 14.6, 6.35, 3.05, 1.81, 7.29, 14.3, 8.32, and 901 μg/m3, respectively.

The levels of acetaldehyde and TVOCs exceeded the indoor guideline (48 μg/m3) and interim target (400 μg/m3) in more than half of the 31 rooms tested.

In addition to guideline chemicals, terpenes (α-pinene and d-limonene) and acetic esters (butyl acetate and ethyl acetate) were often detected in these houses.

The indoor radiation levels measured by a Geiger–Müller tube (Mean: 0.22 μSv/h) were lower than those recorded outdoors (Mean: 0.42 μSv/h), although the shielding effect of the houses was less than for other types of buildings.

Meanwhile in Japan..

Paper; Gamma Radiation Damage To Fukushima Units 1- 4 Spent Fuel Pools
[link to www.simplyinfo.org]

[snip]

CONCLUSION

We have learned many things about our research on gamma heating or radiation damage that can be caused by the fuel racks being so close to the spent fuel pool (SFP 4) walls. This review has raised a host of questions which, at the time of this writing are unanswered as follows:

Analysis to support moving the racks containing the fuel assemblies so close to the wall and adjacent to the concrete (1/2 inch) has not been able to be found. Not even in the documents to support a more dense SFP fuel loading.
Operation in an unanalyzed condition at NPPs (nuclear power plants) must be evaluated to support the continued operation which must be done at Japan’s NPPs.

SFP 4 has had the total fuel loading from the last period of operation centrally placed in the pool. To our knowledge this has not been done at any other reactors and introduces a critical element of trying to complete assessments on the severity of heating and intense gamma radiation induced on the wall in that location
At this point our assumption is that concrete degradation is occurring in the SFP, concrete overheating, spalling, chipping and chemical changes are ongoing.

The annular space between the concrete and the liner is being impacted by potential hydrogen, Co2, hydrogen peroxide or other gas concentrations which produce new challenges.
In addition to the gamma fields there are also spontaneous neutrons which are generated and may escape the racks and interact with the steel liner or concrete structure.

We have established our choice of the boundary conditions within the concrete around which more detailed analysis can be done. The limit is 2 x10e20 rads of dose for gamma radiation. The estimated radiation level of a fuel assembly which has been discharged from the reactor core is on the order of 1 x 10e6Rem/Hr.
We must take into consideration all of the accumulated radiation exposure that has been received since the beginning of operation for unit 4.
