"The military is making adjustments. In May, Crow banned the use of tracer ammunition at all Texas Army National Guard camps, including Camp Swift and Camp Bowie. (Other military personnel also train at these camps.) Tracers, which are normally fired every fifth round, are phosphorous-tipped, allowing the trajectory to be a visible red streak, but they are also highly flammable. Crow has also banned the use of most pyrotechnics, including smoke grenades and artillery simulators. The areas where soldiers are allowed to smoke cigarettes have shrunk as well."

Puppy Rescued from Crack in Ground Caused by Extreme Texas Drought (Video)

Animal Service Officers in the suburban Dallas community of Garland, Texas rescued a puppy Sept. 15 that had fallen into a large crack in the ground in a backyard that was caused by the extreme drought conditions in Texas this summer.

Texas Again

Some 95 percent of the state is listed as being in either "severe" or "exceptional" drought by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Drought Monitor, and Nielson-Gammon said the last 12 months have been the driest one-year period on record in the Lone Star State.

It was recently posted that the drought in Texas, 'exceptional drought', expanded to 65.82 percent from 64.95 percent, according to the "Drought Monitor".

Texas finished its driest 12 months ever through September. Water levels in many of the region's lakes have dropped by more than a dozen feet.

This morning, more than 60% of the US is now dealing with extreme drought conditions that are showing no signs of letting up.

Officials say close to 1300 counties - 1/3 of the counties in the entire country - have now been labeled disaster areas. The Obama Administration is now asking Congress for drought relief help and to pass a $500 billion farm bill.

Drought worsens across the U.S.


HOUSTON — The largest drought in more than half a century strengthened its grip on the United States this week,
particularly in the Midwest and High Plains farming states, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report released Thursday.

More than 70 percent of the Midwest was in some stage of drought this week, up from 63 percent last week, according
to the report by climate experts. Half of the Midwest, which produces about 75 percent of the country’s corn and soybean crop,
was in severe to exceptional drought, up from about a third last week.

Earlier this month, the USDA reduced its estimate of the corn harvest by 12 percent, from 376 million tons to 329 million tons.

“Stunning though USDA’s drop in the projected harvest was, it appears to be a gross underestimate of the fall, given
the widespread deterioration of the crop,” Brown said in a statement. “The actual decline in the harvest will likely be closer to 95 million tons, roughly double the USDA
estimate.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The drought that has settled over more than half of the continental United States this summer is the most widespread in more than half a century.
And it is likely to grow worse.

What is particularly striking about this dry spell is its breadth.
Fifty-five percent of the continental United States — from California to Arkansas, Texas to North Dakota — is under moderate to extreme drought,
according to the government, the largest such area since December 1956.

As of Sunday, more than half of the corn in seven states was in poor or very poor condition, according to the Department of Agriculture.
In Kentucky, Missouri and Indiana, that figure is above 70 percent. Over all, only 31 percent of the nation’s corn is in good to excellent condition,
compared with 66 percent at the same time last year.

But the impact of this drought has extended beyond farming. In Missouri, the torrid conditions have sparked forest fires that resemble the types of wildfires seen in the West.
Already, 117 wildfires have burned in Missouri’s Mark Twain National Forest, a record-setting pace.

Conditions have been so dry that there was a report of hay in a barn combusting on its own.
