Monkeyfister User ID: 1488218 United States 08/28/2011 02:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | BECKET, Mass. (WWLP) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for central Berkshire County and in Western Hampden and Hampshire Counties after a trained weather spotter reported that the dam at Big Robin Lake in East Becket had failed. The water from the dam will be rushing into Walker Brook West Branch of the Westfield River, toward Chester and Huntington. If you are near any of these bodies of water, you are urged to be vigilant and seek higher ground if necessary. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1520977 United States 08/28/2011 02:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Upstate NY: My location we have nothing more than a rainy summer day and no wind. I know millions of people lost power. I watched a hurricane come into N.C. and live reports from Kill Devil Hills where I've seen news reports for many hurricanes throughout the years. As the storm passed, no significant damage was BROADCAST for anyone to see. Most shots were carefully picked with people posing in areas where a street was flooded. It was apparent to any armchair meteorologist early on that a storm that made landfall in N.C. was not going to have enuf steam to be catastrophic later on. There was a storm surge which they are saying has caused billions of dollars of damage. Up the coast, New Jersey may have had the worst damage with roofs off and power lines down. Last night, very late, the anchors on TV refused to note when the storm had weakened. Bill Hemmer said dramatically, "They're waiting for daylight so they can go out and see what's left of their town." Another anchor tried to justify the panic by saying "No matter what Irene DOES OR DOESN'T DO, the impact on tens of millions of people is astounding." Fox news Rick Levanthal reported "you need to keep a 3x5 card in your shoe so they will be able to identify you if you are DEAD." wow. really? Lower Manhattan has some flooding, but across the city they have BRANCHES down and "puddling." The subway damage is yet to be accessed and one tube into the Holland Tunnel is flooded. I'm watching close cropped still-shots of flooding on TV. Many local authorities did not want to play anything down because they are already strapped for cash and want to make sure they get their emergency FUNDING from federal funds. The blow to the economy from the storm paled in comparison to at least 3 major cities being SHUT DOWN in it's anticipation. Nobody wanted to be blamed for anything, so civilization ground to a halt. People can debate whether that was a wise decision, but I am looking forward to a clear assessment of this situation from someone in the news who has no agenda. While the loss of life was of course tragic, we've had greater loss of life with many of the thunderstorms that have come through over the summer. In the last few months, we have seen President Obama and Janet Napolitano ABSENT on many MORE IMPORTANT situations. In anticipation of a re-election campaign, they've suddenly become fearless leaders. At the least, this was a drill for what is coming at us in the future. And if NYC and the rest of the Northeast can't handle a borderline tropical storm better without coming close to declaring marital law in the "best interest" of the people, we're screwed. |

I didn't wan't super doom but I could have been happy with a bit more kickass wind. It was a bit of a letdown. Quoting: centrist77 Yes I knew your first response was accurate. I like storms too. I am also disappointed. I'm glad my house is ok and my family is safe. But we all want to be safe that should go without saying. There will always be more storms and we may find ourselves in a mess. Not that we want that mind you. It is crazy how careful we have to be with what we say. I like storms I like wind I like it when the lights go out. I just want it to all go back to normal afterwards. Is that too much to ask? Yeah I suppose. Take care love and light |

Not one. But I was hoping for massive property damage. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being fascinated by the power of nature, and wanting to see what it looks like when a hurricane takes awnings, signs, and other objects, flops them all around like rag dolls, and even wrecks entire buildings with huge coastal waves. There is nothing wrong with that, and I am sorely disappointed that we didn't see any massive damage at all. I do feel cheated. I greatly look forward to the next go round where perhaps we can see some incredible no holds barred smashing of inanimate objects. |
