Scared to look for a better job, can you help me overcome the paralyzing fear?
I'm scared to look. The though of sitting down at my computer, typing in keywords in job search engines, company job boards, job placement companies terrifies me. I shake, start sweating and hyperventilate and my thoughts start to race.
Then the self defeating voice starts up, nope you'll never get another decent job, you're too old, too long out of the specific field, your resume stinks, you're this, that and everything else.

I need some encouragement, some techniques, positive reinforcement. I live alone, work from home at a lousy and stressful customer service, tech troubleshooting job and find it a little difficult to open up to people after being at home and working like this for too long now. My family is in Europe, my kids are grown and have their own lives to live.

I have one good friend and don't want to burden her too much with my needs as she has things going on in her life, too.

So, any kind words and good suggestions, ideas resources will be appreciated immensely.

You are very prideful, afraid to get your feelings hurt. Just be yourself. They can't take that away from you. Make a list of the things you do now and what you did when you worked. Chances are you will be hired to do less than what you list in your resume. Just don't embellish or bullshit. Employers don't like fakers flipping their burgers or mopping their floors. Keep a positive outlook on life.

Start with baby steps. Open up the job search sites every day, don't feel pressured to search for anything, close it if you feel too much anxiety. Do this everyday and it will become a habit and the anxiety will subside. Eventually you'll have the urge to do a search without all the negative feelings. If the search spikes your anxiety then close the page and repeat the next day. Develop the habit and your brain will go on autopilot eventually without the anxiety.

Prideful, never have thought of myself as being haughty, if that is what you meant. True, I do not want my feelings to get hurt, I don't want this to tear me up emotionally. I know I'll probably not get exactly what I'd like but hopefully something a little better paid and more varied. What I need is a little help with the organizational aspect, kind of like a doctors prescription, a la I want you fo, every morning spend x time doing this, then take that and do this with it and here's the logic behind doing it like this...sort of a daily flow chart of sequences, I think if I have certain routines, scheduled tasks I'll feel calmer and better able to break it down into manageable bites so to speak. Right now it is this enormous, amorphous cloud, black and threatening.

What things Are of interest to you? Figure that out then commit to one of these to find an interactive group on line that also leads you to ones near you to associate and widen your circle of friends or acquaintances. Someone in this will have suggesions on how you might develop your resume. Get out of the little box you have confined yourself in, one step at a time.

Perhaps you are too comfortable living as you do???

Ah, thank you for that, something clicked, what you're telling me it's okay, I can allow myself to work my way into being if not comfortable, at least not freaking out at the thought and just do a little, sort of a desensitization period to work through the irrational fear. Three weeks to a new habit, right?
I start a yoga class next week, maybe I'll use the yoga as the reward for making the daily effort in finding job postings I feel qualified for.

Thank you for that suggestion.

Thank you for your suggestion as to finding what interests me and pursuing groups/people in that. I've started that with LinkedIn and hope to work with a couple of people in that direction.
I liked what I did, took eight or so years hopping jobs within the company to find and I was happy every morning to go and do it. My problem was I allowed the job to become my life and when the industry and the company went down the tubes I lost my identity I suppose, add losing my mom and a few other people who really were my emotional support system, it's a long road back to self confidence. Losing my mom was the worst pain I've ever felt, only my kids mean more to me.

At least you have a sense of humor. You handled that slur graciously. See? Now wasn't that easy? Is that the real you who retorted to that pest? Now, expand on that. You just lost sight of your hidden talents. Like looking at the Jahari Window, I can see something in you that you do not see in yourself. Reassess your inner strengths and you will find the courage to forge ahead with confidence. Just remember, we all shit in the same ocean, put pants on one leg at a time, stink when we don't shower, bleed when we are cut, pass out when we get drunk. The only difference between people are fingerprints and DNA. Other than that, we are all in the same boat. We are all born. We will all die, and we will all pay taxes. Now get off your dead ass and get a job and pay your taxes. Me and my welfare kids depend on you.

Thank you for your insightfulness, a keen observation. My father started, he didn't want a daughter but he's long gone. It's a message I grew up with and recognize to be very wrong but how do I excise it from my psyche? Self validation is a difficult, daily process I've only started in the past few weeks and today I just felt a little lonely and am reaching out for some useful suggestions to reach the next level.

Yes, I do have a sense of humor, and yes, being isolated does peculiar things to one's mind including loss of perspective, sort of like having vision in one eye only. Inner strength must be there or I wouldn't be here so I'll start to assess the good in my life and pare down the negativity, thank you. You know, I'm learning a lot from the responses in terms of what I project, very neat by-product.

It's always better to find work when you have a job than not. Being out of work and trying to find an emplyer is a drag.

Why look for the beginning of the string? Get a scissors and cut the string. Now you have the start of two strings. Same with reflecting on your past experiences. Start with what job you liked most, pull the best parts out of it, and go from there.

Re: Scared to look for a better job, can you help me overcome the paralyzing fear?
Please give up the Fear.

Its easy, just say i love myself, i love others, i trust myself, i trust others, i forgive myself, i forgive others.

You managed to live this long with fear, imagine what life would be like with out it. Visualize you getting a good job, one you like, in your talent area, with better pay.

Don't give up the search on the computer, trust your instincts mostly, volunteer in your specialty area. if your a good worker, positive, and kind compassionate being, someone will recognize your qualities and want you on your team. I feel this in my bones.

Re: Scared to look for a better job, can you help me overcome the paralyzing fear?
It's always better to find work when you have a job than not. Being out of work and trying to find an emplyer is a drag.
 Quoting: ))BAPHOMET((

There are always employers willing to hire on if the applicant has the right background even if one is unemployed. Yes, in today's market, it's easier to jump from job to job while employed, but not impossible to land a job iv one is unemployed. State Departments of Labor usually post job listings.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14979079

Yep, I know they list jobs, it's my huge anxiety to actually physically looking at the postings, tweak the resume, submit and mybe never, ever get a call, email for an interview that I'm having a problem with. And, I have a job, just one I intensely dislike.

Keep in mind that no two jobs are exactly alike. Make a list of what jobs you can handle and use this list when searching the want ads. If you feel you can do about half of what an employer is looking for, you stand a good chance of getting an interview, if not, the job. I remember going for an interview my guts were in a turmoil and my hands and legs were shaking. I would be a ball of knots. But once in the interview, I would first generalize my prior work experience and then ask what the employer was looking for and then I would sit quietly while the interviewer explained the job description. Only then I would volunteer any experience I had that was close to what the job entailed. What you may not realize is that the interviewer is probably just as nervious as you are. Don't take over the interview by boasting. NEVER ASK HOW MANY HOLIDAYS OR VACATION TIME COMES WITH THE JOB. Do ask what the job pays and what the hours are. Oh, try to get some information on what the company makes or services. Use this information to let the interviewer know that you are somewhat familiar with his business and you can start with minimal training.
Just remember, no matter what job you take, there is ALWAYS some training involved. No two business do business the same way.

Carry on.

Re: Scared to look for a better job, can you help me overcome the paralyzing fear?

Why look for the beginning of the string? Get a scissors and cut the string. Now you have the start of two strings. Same with reflecting on your past experiences. Start with what job you liked most, pull the best parts out of it, and go from there.

Damned, you are so much more practically minded than me, didn't even think of that. Another good suggestion. Looks like I'll have my starting point mapped out quickly here. And thank you again!

I feel this in my bones.

follow any sign you may get, you might call em coincidences, but they are synchronicities. Each one you recognize will bring you closer to your goal.

Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I have been doing some of these things, positive self affirmation and listening into myself, looking to connect to the core of who I am, can't be all bad as people respond easily to me in person, in fact people tend to seek me out when they have issues ad I listen and fry to understand what they need to resolve them, most wind up talking it out and finding the solution without much real help from me.
