November 17, 2012 – TONGA - A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck along the Pacific plate boundary, near the Tonga trench. The earthquake struck at a depth of 9.8 km (6.1 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was 174 km (108 miles) ENE of Neiafu, Tonga. No tsunami warnings were issued for the region. Today’s 6.1 earthquake is the ninth major earthquake to strike the planet in the last 9 days. The current string of seismic activity began on November 8, with successive earthquakes striking Vancouver Islands, Myanmar, Guatemala, the Gulf of Alaska, Aisen and Coquimbo Chile, Mexico, the Kuril Islands and lastly, the Tonga Region. –The Extinction Protocol

Scientists do not believe that volcanic activity at Tongariro and Ruapehu this year are related, but are not excluding the idea.

GNS Science announced Friday that pressure was building up inside Ruapehu’s Crater Lake and there was an increased likelihood of an eruption.

Tongariro, which is located near Ruapehu, erupted in August, the first time in more than 100 years. White Island, off the coast of the Bay of Plenty, erupted the same month.

While the White Island eruption could not have been related to the volcanic activity at Ruapehu and Tongariro, scientists were not ruling out a link between the latter, GNS volcanologist Nico Fournier said.

“We don’t have evidence at the moment that the activity of the two volcanoes are related,” Fournier said. “But we can’t exclude it entirely.”

Meeting over Ruapehu eruption fears

Organisers of an adventure run on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu are meeting volcanologists amid fears it could erupt in coming weeks.

Signs of increased volcanic activity since last week prompted the central North Island mountain's Aviation Colour Code to be raised from green to yellow to reflect signs of elevated unrest.

The Goat, a 21-km run from Whakapapa to Turoa Ski Fields across the western slopes of Mount Ruapehu is due to take place on December 1.

Organisers today said the event was still planned to go ahead, but they have met with volcano experts and would continue to monitor the situation.

Changes in measurements at the volcano over the past few weeks showed pressure was building and an eruption was more likely over ``the next weeks to months'', said GNS Science volcanologist Steven Sherburn.

"It's pretty much status quo at the moment and we're waiting on a good day to go up there and take some samples,'' said volcanologist Nico Fournier.

In particular, experts were were for checking for increased earthquake activity, and changes in crater lake levels or the chemical composition of the lake, which were all potential signs of increased volcanic activity, he said.

Last week the temperature a few hundred metres beneath crater lake was about 800C, but the lake itself was only about 20C, suggesting a vent was partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure build-up, Mr Sherburn said.

"A sudden release of the pressure may lead to an eruption.''

Experts are monitoring activity at the volcano.

Small earthquakes have been occurring about 5km beneath the summit area of Ruapehu since late October, but these might not be directly related to the high temperatures beneath crater lake because they were much deeper, said GNS scientists.

The last eruption at Mt Ruapehu was in 2007.

A year earlier, an eruption also occurred and caused a small earthquake near the crater.

Scientists are warning there are heightened signs of volcanic activity at Mt Ruapehu and an eruption could be just weeks away.

GNS Science experts say pressure is building up in the crater lake at the volcano and there is now a high risk of an eruption.

Volcanologist Steven Sherburn said: "We think that the temperature a few hundred metres beneath crater lake is about 800C, but the lake itself is only about 20C.

"This suggests the vent is partly blocked, which may be leading to a pressure build-up beneath crater lake. A sudden release of the pressure may lead to an eruption."

Dr Sherburn said the changes in measurements at the volcano over the past few weeks showed that an eruption was more likely over "the next weeks to months".

Although experts were monitoring the activity at the volcano, Dr Sherburn acknowledged that an eruption could come at any time and without warning.

"We are monitoring Ruapehu closely, but it often does not give any immediate warning that it is going to erupt," he said.

As a result, the Aviation Colour Code has increased from green to yellow, indicating a volcano is experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels.

There have been several warnings caused by irregular signs of activity at Ruapehu in the past few years.

A few months earlier a dam holding back the crater lake burst, causing a lahar. In 2006, an eruption also occurred and caused a small earthquake near the crater.

Scientists will be monitoring Mt Ruapehu closely over the coming weeks with fears the volcano could erupt at any time.

Mount Tongariro erupted for the first time in around 100 years in August and scientists say the volcanic activity throughout the region is linked.

Some tourism operators are reporting an increase in business, with outdoor enthusiasts keen to see the mountains in action.

Tramper Simon Townsend told ONE News: "I think we would have done it anyway but to come and see a volcano actually steaming - it's really worth doing."

Scientists are also trying to work out the nature of any possible eruption.

"We think there has been a build-up of pressure underneath the crater lake and we are concerned if that pressure is released suddenly, we could have an eruption," said GNS vulcanologist Steven Sherburn.

"The eruption in 2007 which threw rocks around the summit area and sent some lahars down the upper part of the mountain - that we believe was driven by a failure of a sealed zone like we're talking about at the moment," he said.

A local guide says volcanic activity in the region is keeping him busy.

"We've got massive vents that are spewing out hot steam and smoke and some fantastic craters that have been the result of the bombs that have come out of the crater on August the sixth," said Stewart Barclay from Adrift tours.

An exclusion zone's been set up to keep people away from the dangerous parts of the mountain and lahar warning systems are in place on and around the mountain.

The Volcanic Alert Level is currently set at 1 or yellow to indicate signs of volcano unrest on Geonet.org.nz.

Warning over toxic shellfish extended

A public health warning against eating shellfish from an area along the west coast of the North Island has been extended.

The public has been advised not to consume shellfish collected from Mohakatino north to Maunganui Bluff, including the Manukau and Kaipara Harbours.

Warnings were sent out last month after routine tests on shellfish samples taken from Kawhia and Raglan showed levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP).

Medical Office of Health Dr Simon Baker said ongoing monitoring has shown levels of PSP along the coast.

"People should take note of the areas that contain high levels of PSP and avoid collecting shellfish in these areas."

Shellfish include kina, mussels, toheroa, pipis, tuatua, oysters cockles and scallops. Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

Symptoms of PSP include numbness and tingling around the mouth or face, difficulties in swallowing or breathing, dizziness or double vision or in severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure.

Pike River families gather in Greymouth

Family and friends of the 29 men killed in the Pike River Mine disaster have gathered in Greymouth to mark the second anniversary of the explosion.

Among them were the family of Malcolm Campbell, 25, who travelled from their home in Scotland to attend the service.

Jane and Malcolm Campbell said they made their first visit to their son's memorial headstone this morning.

"We've got people looking after Malcolm's [memorial] stone and everything because we're not here to do that. So I mean that is a great comfort for us as well," said father Malcolm Campbell.

Jane Campbell said she still had hope that her son would be brought home.

"He's all alone, I just feel he has to come home, we need him home," she said.

Later this evening all of the families will gather for the service at the White Knight Bridge, where Malcolm Campbell will carry a wreath on behalf of all of the families all the way up to Pike River Mine's portal.

Mark Pizey, Pike Project General Manager, said risks remain around the portal and gas levels were taken by Solid Energy staff today.

"We don't want 160 people exposed to those risks, but we feel we can manage the risk with a few," he said.

The tragedy will also be marked with a memorial organised by the Miners' Union at Blackball this evening.

Outpouring of sympathy

Prime Minister John Key says his thoughts are with the people of the West Coast as New Zealand remembers the second anniversary of the Pike River mining tragedy.

"I am thinking of the families and the people of the West Coast today. New Zealand has immense sympathy for their continuing grief.

"There is no comfort in my words for the families of those who died, as they are still living this tragedy day after day," said Key.

While Labour Leader David Shearer expressed his sympathy for the victims' families.

"The loss of the 29 men that day will not be forgotten. It was a tragedy that should never have happened. Our sincere condolences go to all those who are gathering on the West Coast at 3.45pm today to hold a minute's silence in their memory.

"Their families, friends and the country as a whole mourn their loss but also celebrate their lives and the contribution they made to their communities. May they rest in peace," said Shearer.

Mine entry 'possible'

Earlier this month three international mine experts met with Solid Energy, Mines Rescue and the Labour Department to discuss whether a re-entry of Pike River mine was possible.

Wanganui-born Dave Feickert and British mining experts David Creedy and Bob Stevenson paid their own way to Greymouth to try and help the families of the 29 men killed in the 2010 explosion.

Stevenson said re-entering the mine was possible but with an element of risk.

The mine's owner, Solid Energy, said it was open to discussing a recovery plan, but would need a sign off from the High Hazards Unit.

Meanwhile, Minister of Labour Kate Wilkinson stepped down from her position following a damning report from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the 2010 West Coast mine explosion, which was released on November 5.

Key said the lives of 29 men might have been spared if the Department of Labour had "done its job better".

November 19, 2012 – AUSTRALIA - Moe has been ranked as one of Australia’s earthquake danger zones, according to a new national hazard map, released yesterday. The Latrobe Valley town joined locations in the Northern Territory and Western Australia as the regions most at risk after Moe was at the epicenter of two earthquakes in as many months this year. Shockwaves were felt by millions across the state, when a 5.4 magnitude quake – Victoria’s biggest – struck 16km southwest of Moe in June, damaging homes and throwing people from their chairs. A second, 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck just over a month later at the same location, and experts called it an aftershock. Seismologists from Geoscience Australia developed the Earth Hazard Map of Australia by analyzing the location of past earthquakes. York and Kirwan in Western Australia and Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory are also at risk. Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson explained the map estimated the likelihood of a particular area experiencing strong ground-shaking from earthquakes. He said it was this, rather than the magnitude of an earthquake, that endangered people, buildings and infrastructure. The new risk map could be used by emergency services and influence Australian building standards to bolster earthquake-prone areas against damage. “Although these maps do not enable us to predict earthquakes, they will allow engineers and planners to design and locate buildings and infrastructure so as to better protect our communities,” Mr Ferguson said. –Herald Sun
