No he says the total cost of them together is 1.10. He said that the bat costs a dollar more than the ball.
That leaves 10 cents because that ten cents was included in the total.
The total sum of 1.00 + .10 = 1.10
Take away the cost of the bat which is 1.00, you're left with .10.

Unable do basic word problems, huh? try again. the difference between a dollar and 10 cents is not a dollar... the difference between 1.05 and .05 is one dollar.. therefore the ball is 5 cents..
