Another quake in Bulgaria I think just now.

EMSC had a warning notice at the TOP of the page saying it was felt 7 mins ago.

But now EMSC has gone down again for me so I can't see the NEW readings coming in.

Just wandered why you perceive these earthquakes as rare? Statistically Bulgaria expects an earthquake of mag 5+ every few years, Italy mag 6+ every year, brazil mag 4+ every 10 to 12 months (all conservative).

No, it's not. The strongest EQ in Europe, over the last 150 years occurred in Bulgaria. It was a 7.9 in 1904. Do some research and you will find that Bulgaria has a long history of EQs. It is a very seismically active area.

Just a thought for the "Wake me when it's a 7, 8, 9+ MAG" folk:

Depending on location, with a quake of such magnitude, you may not have the luxury of being "woken up" and having time to figure out what's, what. In addition, those who have acted as a watchman of sorts may opt NOT to knock on all doors of the burning building prior to exiting...Many will be too busy getting the heck outta dodge!

To all who believe this was a tension release and therefore a good thing - the seismic activity is merely piking up.

Earthquakes are getting more frequent.

This is just the beginning.

no, not really. given that the USGS can pinpoint locations of earthquakes in japan, it doesn't make any difference that bulgaria didn't have a seismic network until 2004. seismic waves travel the globe, they are not dependent on borders. there is land, there is sea. one land mass, one ocean. borders were drawn by rulers, with rulers for rulers.

Very true for large earthquakes maybe 8+ can be picked up at stations all over the world, however below 5 mag not always the case, espescially shallow earthquakes. Usgs use data from stations located usually within 100 km from the epicenter when they make the measurement this is sent electronically
