Istanbul: Gulf-backed moves to arm Syria’s opposition are gaining momentum amid growing flows of funds and weapons and a better organisation of deliveries to fighters on the ground.

The stepped-up arming of the opposition comes as world powers scramble to find common ground to impose an end to President Bashar Al Assad’s escalating crackdown on a 15-month uprising.

According to Syrian activists close to the Free Syrian Army, which has a military council based on the Syrian-Turkish border, brigades of army defectors in rebellious provinces have named representatives who relay the military needs of the fighters and receive weapons.

The activists say more significant funds are now coming from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in addition to a regular flow of donations from Syrian expatriates and some wealthy individuals in Syria.

Russia Underlines Iran's Major Role in Resolving Syrian Crisis

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov stressed Iran's vital role and influence in resolving regional issues, and said Tehran as a regional powerhouse should be included in a contact group to put an end to the Syrian crisis.


Gatilov said that Russia supports UN-Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan's proposal of setting up an international contact group to bring together key global and regional players to help put an early end to the 16- month Syrian crisis.

The senior diplomat noted that such a group should include members of the UN Security Council, as well as regional states, " primarily those bordering Syria and having their own interests in this region".

A country like Iran "has a full right" to participate in the process, said Gatilov. "Iran's participation could play a constructive role in searching for solutions to the Syrian conflict," he asserted.

I've been wondering if this is the case for weeks now. How do we know it isn't someone other than the Syrian government who is actually killing these people? If I were a powerful 'group' who wanted to overthrow a government (for whatever reason) I think I'd send in 'people' to make it seem like the government was killing their people so that the 'good' governments of the World would have to send in their troops to save the people.

Syria is a VITAL nation for Russian military. Russia can not and will not loose it's alliance with Syria.

To start, Russia has a massive naval base their. Among many airbases and other installations.

Do not be fooled, this is not Libya or Egypt.

The Russians will invade and occupy Syria if they must in order to maintain military strength. ESPECIALLY facing an Iran war coming up, the last thing Russia wants is the loss of military force in that region.

And if Russia is forced to occupy Syria, Israel is not that far away and would make a GREAT warm water naval base for Russia.

Sorry but watching the Russians speak on Syria in front of UN etc...like Lavrov, who clearly states a third hand is stoking the unrests, would you only believe it if you saw it on CNN, BBC or whatever? That is the first time I have heard that Syria and Russia are not allied. From everything I have read, they are strong strategic partners. And Russia is the only saving grace Syria has in the UN, so why would Syria speak badly about having them as allies, that makes no sense.
