At first I thought it was a sound from the radio I usually have on at night, but now that other people heard it too, I began to wonder if it was real or a dream. My dog must have heard it too! Freaky!! |

Mcoll User ID: 34992201 United States 02/23/2013 03:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I heard it tonight in DeBary, FL which is a half hour north of Orlando. It was coming from the south. It started at 11 pm and is still going on a little bit now forty five minutes later. Quoting: lohr1975 34984379 I heard it as well in Tampa, FL (15 miles from downtown). I was sitting outside having a cigarette when I heard this loud constant sound that sounded somewhat like an airplane, but seemed to just start out of nowhere. The sound continued for around 10 minutes, and without fading out, just stopped. That happened 5 times, for different lengths of time. My brother and I thought it might have something to do with the jets that were just grounded, possibly the rumbling was from them moving faster than the speed of sound, and the sudden end was from them slowing to below the speed of sound. Still very peculiar. :P |
anonymous User ID: 24152041 United States 02/23/2013 11:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Same thing for us, we heard the sound again last night too, everyone woke up a little before 2 am, also thought it was heard briefly in the 10-11pm time frame as well. Sounded like something similar to diesel engine noise, loud low rumbling a ways off. Clearwater again. Could hear it through the walls of the house. So I went online this morning to check this thread for the first time since the last date it was heard (the last dated posts mid february), and sure enough others heard it too .... but all over Florida? What would that be? New aircraft? Construction of some unknown kind? I like logical explanations. Not mystery noises. Got to get a recording of it. |
butterfly User ID: 31779013 United States 02/23/2013 05:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | heard it last night also-told my husband to "listen,it's the strange sound again but not directly over us this time..it's further away....and then it shut off completely." i guess that's because it was over tampa. (i'm in clearwater) it is just the weirdest thing-you can feel something about it; it's not the same as just hearing a plane in the night. WHAT the heck is it? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 29532310 United States 03/09/2013 01:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm located on north Sheldon Rd. I've been hearing this rumbling for many months now. Its currently happening right now(1:30AM EST). Im inside and with out even going outside i can here it like always.(Have a HEPA Air purifier running so their is a fair about of white noise, just to show it's not a faint sound) Right now it's different than normal, for the past 20-30 min it starts low and come up to a moderate rumble, last for about 10 seconds, and the stops abruptly. Then any where from 1 min to a few minutes later does it again. It just finished a cycle when i started writing this. Hasn't started back again.... may be done for the night...or not may start here and again in a little. It typically seems to fade in and out and only happens a few time. This was the most consecutive times i've heard it to date. The crazy thing is this rumbling seems to have no schedule. I have a very hectic sleep schedule and I've heard it at one point or another at all time of the day/night (24hrs) and all days of the week. It can be quite annoying to, keeps me from falling asleep and even wakes me up at times. One day it was so loud i heard it while in the shower, i've never heard it that loud since though. Anyone here it tonight? I've also been in Oldsmar and heard it coming from the north a few times. |
UpAllNight User ID: 34992302 United States 03/09/2013 02:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm in Clearwater near Gulf to Bay and just heard it too. I work a late shift and I'm usually up 'til 2 or 3am. This was the second time in a month. Last time was late February and the first time I heard it was a few months ago after I'd moved back here from the West Coast. Never heard it when I lived here several years ago. At first I didn't think much of it because I grew up in an industrial area in NY and heard smokestacks off gassing and other industrial noises a lot late at night. But this is different... As everyone else has said it sounds like the building of a jet engine or lead up to a sonic boom but there is no boom and the noise just cuts off after a few moments, then it repeats. It's low frequency rumbling, starts quietly and gets VERY loud but when I held the phone up for a friend they couldn't hear it. It's not deafening but it seems in some strange way to occupy lots of space. This goes on for usually a half hour but tonight it happened intermittently for an hour. I can't find any news items anywhere about it, just other people posting on this site and a few others, which at least helps confirm its weirdness. Read an NBC blurb after the last time it happened which said that fighters from a base in Key West would be doing exercises over the Gulf but that doesn't explain two months ago. This also doesn't sound anything like flyovers. It's way more industrial sounding. Just adding my voice as further validation. I hope we find out what it is soon. |

sleepless in Clearwater User ID: 35954583 United States 03/11/2013 09:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | we heard the noise last night at 2 am. March 11th 2013. We've heard it several times. It sounds like they are testing a jet engine. Like a jet starts up but never takes off. It lasts for several minutes and then stops abruptly, then there was another 30 second spurt. We thought it was coming from St Petes airport. We are on Tampa Bay near Belleair rd. Why isn't there anything on the local news anout this? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 29251224 Canada 03/14/2013 12:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I also keep hearing these noises quite often lately. I live in Manitoba, Canada. I heard it quite a bit late 2012 and more still in 2013 and right now even. It's about 2:30am here. March 14th. Sometimes it's a little quieter other times MUCH louder. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33542397 United States 03/16/2013 04:30 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hi everybody! It's me -- the person who originally started this thread. I'm very happy to see that many other people in my area are hearing the same noise and are going online to see who else heard it. I wish the guy who said he was going to contact BayNews9 would do it and then let us all know what he found out. I, personally, haven't heard the exact same noise again since last August. I still run my fan at night for white noise so I won't wake up when I hear strange noises. I guess that the time I heard it, I was already awake and just heard it above the noise of the fan. To the guy who wondered if Shephard's still has their buffet on the beach -- I think they still do, so come on back for something good to eat -- just bring your ear plugs with you. There seem to be a few different noises that people are hearing, but it seems like the majority hear the sound that I heard. Somebody, please figure it out! This is taking too long! I liked the idea that one poster had of calling a friend who lived nearby to see if they heard it, too. I hope more people do that. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 20239793 United States 03/17/2013 07:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | II'm in Clearwater by Sunset Point Rd and US 19 and tonight, just about 10 minutes ago around 9:45, I heard the oddest rumbling. It sounded like a plane was flying overhead except it lasted for at least 5 minutes straight as something was hovering directly over us. The windows were even shaking which is what alerted me in the first place. I opened the balcony door and it sounded like it was to the southeast of us which would be by the airport (PIE). But it went on too long for it to be a plane. I work from home and hear planes passing by all day as we live between a major airport and a small airport. But this was much different. It was like a constant loud rumbling sound. I looked outside but it seems a bit overcast so I couldn't see anything in the sky. Did anyone else in the area hear it? |

Went on for some minutes then stopped suddenly. Mid Clearwater area. Sounded like the other poster had it closer, it was not shaking the windows but def could hear it in the house. We also hear planes regularly but this is different in that it does not go in a direction and fade off. Loud stationary deep rumble then stops. |
Just Wonderingg User ID: 33542397 United States 03/18/2013 04:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Original poster here again. I went outside to get something out of my car around 6:15 and heard the loud rumbling sound again. It was coming from the southeast, just like a poster said yesterday. It was already going on when I went outside and it continued for about seven or eight more minutes. It got a little bit louder at one point, but mostly was a consistent rumbling sound with no logical source. I was wishing a neighbor would come outside so I could get another opinion, but no such luck. It stopped rather abruptly. I'm calling BayNews9. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 29532310 United States 03/19/2013 12:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been hearing the rumbling a lot more than normal the past week. Just now (3:00PM) I kept hearing rumbling(on and of short intervals), then it stopped for a few minutes. Next I actually felt/heard it come from the ground. It is just short sharp rumbles, I can't think of anything at the moment to describe it. I can feel it through my chair at my desk. As of right now(3:05PM), it only lasted intermittently for about 2-3 minutes. I haven't heard/felt anything since. |
Just Wonderingg User ID: 33542397 United States 03/19/2013 03:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Original poster here. A friend's son works for the Coast Guard. When they do checks on the planes, they start them up, listen for awhile for any abnormalities and then shut them down. That would explain why the noise doesn't fade away (like lots of posters say). Ducting could explain why people hear the noise at a great distance. As for the noise in the night, if they have started up a rescue helicopter and are waiting for instructions, that would explain why a noise would go on and on and on. I don't know about when they fly out - if the noise would fade or just stop if they went directly up and the ducting no longer was a factor. That's our best explanation so far. The location fits with what a lot of the posters say. For the other people, I don't know. I'm still working on calling BayNews9, but you have to call them before 5PM weekdays. |

Jeff in Homosassa User ID: 10747008 United States 03/22/2013 10:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This has been going on where I live an hour north of Tampa (Homosassa/Crystal River area) for over a year. It happened again last night about 9:15 pm and I went online and found this thread. Several of my neighbors have been very concerned, also. It did it 3 times last night. It slowly increases in volume and then just suddenly cuts off. My wife posted on Facebook and people 80 miles to the north heard it too (north of chiefland and Gainesville). What is amazing is that it is rattling windows and doors like this over a very large area, and I am not sure what could such a wide area event. It is certainly not something normal. |
Just wonderingg User ID: 33542397 United States 03/22/2013 03:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a scientific explanation I got from a science research website -- solar flares. It sounds like the most likely reason to me so far. "In our opinion, the source of such powerful and immense manifestation of acoustic-gravity waves must be very large-scale energy processes. These processes include powerful solar flares and huge energy flows generated by them, rushing towards Earth's surface and destabilizing the magnetosphere, ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Thus, the effects of powerful solar flares: the impact of shock waves in the solar wind, streams of corpuscles and bursts of electromagnetic radiation are the main causes of generation of acoustic-gravitation waves following increased solar activity. Given the surge in solar activity as manifested itself in the higher number and energy of solar flares since mid-2011, we can assume that there is a high probability of impact of the substantial increase in solar activity on the generation of the unusual humming coming from the sky." |
