Now there's a real product with great engineering that litterally pays for itself. Not like Face Book stock or Government Motors making absolutley nothing and taking government money to make the losses look like some sort of progress.

I heard Tesla Motors approached GM, FORD, and Chrysler and all were afraid that a good car would put them out of business. Now the government pays them to be in business and they are still going OUT of biz.

Tesla Motors also runs on government grants, einstein. In other words, without the government, there would be no Tesla. Not only that but the concept of electric cars is old technology just like internal combustion cars. There are better technological alternatives out there but no one wants to develop them.

In June 2009 Tesla was approved to receive US$465 million in interest-bearing loans from the United States Department of Energy. The funding, part of an US$8 billion program for advanced vehicle technologies (Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program), supports engineering and production of the Model S sedan, as well as the development of powertrain technology that Tesla plans to sell to other automakers. The low-interest loans are not related to the "bailout" funds that GM and Chrysler have received, nor are they related to the 2009 economic stimulus package.

Re: First Tesla Model S EV Rolls Out Of Factory
Isn't it funny that the government keeps funding alternative technologies that have absolutely no chance of succeeding? The electric car concept has been tried several times by every major manufacturer and failed. Tesla will be no different. The reason that the government funds electric car technology is so that it fails and keeps the oil companies in business.

Hydrogen fuel-cell technology could be developed now and put both existing automakers and oil companies out of business. That is why fuel-cell technology is not funded and there are no high-profile companies trying to develop it.

Oil companies, just like banks, own the government. Until that changes all we will get is regurgitated technologies in a new wrapper.

just wait till that guy really wants to go some where other from home to work. it's fine when you can charge it while you sleep, but on a longer road trip it will leave you in some small town begging to people to let you plug in. Then it will take 12 hrs to charge. What the F are you going to do then? With out some kind of onboard generator to charge the battey when you run out of juice it is a worthless POS.

Amen, brother. I actually know an engineer at Tesla in the bay area. I was trying to tell him that the only way that an electric car could become viable is if the charging technology were to be updated. He just smiled and said, "I'm sure they have looked at all that stuff." Yea, right. So instead of updating and developing better and faster charging techniques, they restyle the package and put the same shitty technology inside.

My idea is to use technology similar to the "hot spot" technology used to charge mobile devices without having to plug them in. By placing "hot spots" on or alongside the roadway, the electric vehicle's batteries would charge as it drives over or past the "hot spots." Then again what do I know, I'm just a common sense thinker.

IIRC it has something like 150 miles worth of charge on the cheap version. That's more than enough for 95% of the time you're driving, especially if you live in a city.

Sure it does. Every electric car manufacturer has tried to claim that type of bullshit. Maybe in a perfect world where no a/c is used, without hills and bridges, and people who never have to accelerate to get on the freeway, it might get 150 miles per charge. However, in the real world the Tesla is as worthless as any other electric car. I hope you understand that the range given is only for straight-line driving like on the freeway. In city driving you would be lucky to get 30 miles per charge. Another problem with electric cars is that performance falls off sharply as the battery begins to discharge. So at half-charge the car would not accelerate as well as at full charge.

Remember the piece of shit Chevy Volt? They were going to make it a straight electric car with a very long range per charge. They couldn't make it work and thus had to make the car a hybrid. I predict that the Tesla will never get off the ground as a mass produced and marketed vehicle. Sure, they will sell a few cars here and there but that's all they will ever sell.

I haven't heard about any hybrids in development. I agree that Tesla will go bankrupt with electric-only cars.

Want to hear an interesting story about Tesla's Fremont, California plant? Well that is where NUMMI used to be. NUMMI was a joint venture between Toyota and GM. Both brands of vehicles were produced there. When GM went bankrupt, Toyota dissolved the partnership and did not want anything to do with the plant. So the plant was shut down and the workers sent home. Tesla came along and purchased the plant. The weirdest thing about this is that NUMMI was the best run and most profitable plant that GM had. So why the government did not step in to save it is beyond me. Did the government have plans for Tesla to step in from the get go? Remember that the bailouts happened once Obama took office. So if nothing else Obama wanted Tesla there so that his administration could look like it was eco-conscious and play to his tree-hugger base.

What kind of fuckery is this?

If Nikola Tesla had designed the battery for it, there wouldn't be a battery! The thing would work off of free energy from the Earth.

With that range, I could even go to Vermont for the weekend.

It's all a sick fucking joke.

Rome is burning, the fiddlers are playing and it's bread and circuses in the mean time.

To succeed Tesla needs to produce an electric econobox that sells for less than any other car on the market.

Their luxury electric car likely used more energy to produce than it will ever save.

"The Tesla Supercharger recharges Model S quickly. Super quickly. Superchargers are not for everyday use, but for refueling quickly on road trips. A Supercharger can charge about half the battery in 30 minutes. All Model S vehicles with the 85 kWh battery can use Superchargers as can properly equipped 60 kWh battery vehicles. Superchargers will be positioned at convenient locations along major interstates throughout the country."

In other words, you can use a supercharger but only in emergencies. If you use it too often, it will ruin the battery. Just another gimmick. Not only that but there aren't any superchargers along the freeways. They have yet to be installed. Good luck with all that.

So a $500 million loan. That's really not that much.
Tesla Motors is not your average EV maker. The motor in the car is actually based on a Nikola Tesla design.
That may be why it gets up to 300 miles on a charge and will soon be available with a super charger that will give you 150 miles on a 30 minute charge.
The goal of the company is to make these kind of cars better and less expensive than the major automakers.
The car is priced at $57k. Not bad for all the technology.
Tesla Motors is also owned by Elon Musk.

There are four EV chargers slated to be installed in the town I live in. I am not sure if they are "Super" chargers or not (If that makes a difference).

The website say that the superchargers will be placed along the freeways. So I would not think that the chargers going in your town are superchargers. Anyhow, expect to see many frustrated Tesla owners stuck on the side of the road while waiting for either a tow or a charge. Who the fuck wants to wait 30 minutes for a charge regardless of how far the charge takes you.

3 of the chargers would be within a couple blocks of a freeway. I am not sure if you're implying that they are going to be at rest stops or just within a short distance of a freeway.

Who cares where the chargers will be. The Tesla and the technology that the Tesla is built on are a joke. It has been tried before by several manufacturers to no avail. No one is going to buy a car knowing that they might have to be stuck on the side of the road for 30 minutes while the battery "half-charges." Not only that but performance with a "half-charge" is for shit. You only get peak performance from a nearly full charged battery. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

People who buy these type of cars aren't going to travel across the United States with them. They are purchased as a commuter car and an errand car. The technology might not be up to standards at the moment, but things need to start somewhere. It seems that opponents of EV's always focus on the negative aspects of the technology. Who cares? If it's a gimmick, then let it be. People can afford it. And please don't go into how much the gov't is subsidizing this technology. We can say the same thing about oil.
