I have no party or religious affiliation deciding how I think. I believe in common sense and to live and let live. I would not have posted this thread had I not had a 2 hour conversation today with two of my closest friends who happen to be Lesbians and have been together for 32 years. I'm looking for some insight into this ploy being used by Barack Obama's reelection campaign. I believe the ramifications of this are two fold: 1. Votes 2. Data Mining to pin point those in the gay community who will cause a threat when all of the promises turn out to be lies. Not that this President has ever lied....of course. They know what all of this "gay rights" shit is about and they don't want any part of it. Um... The right to the same benefits that straight couples have - since gay couples are paying the same taxes? Equal taxes Equal rights. If conservatives are soo 'small government' and 'for personal liberty' they should be the ones championing civil rights for gay people. They aren't SPECIAL rights - they're the same rights other coupled adults have. Who cares what the NAME is. If the religious right gets all twisted up calling it 'marriage' that's fine. But at least grant civil unions that are completely equal to the rights in a marriage. The problem is there are two parts to 'marriage' -- but you can have 1 without the other. the civil part gives you the rights and benefits. the religious part gives you the ceremony. Not everyone participates in the religious part. And some have a religious ceremony but never get any sort of official paperwork. Every gay person I know just wants to be able to visit their loved ones in the hospital, inherit property upon death, file joint tax returns, etc. And unfortunately -- without granting them the over 1,400 rights that come with a marriage certificate, most of that is unachievable. You can google story upon story of a gay couple where one of them died. And despite having a will their family came in and blocked the inheritance from going to the surviving partner. That's BS. |

But my gay & lesbian friends are the ones who made me realize the dangers of special interest groups pushing the legislation of morality. Quoting: Éireann Exactly.. So why do we have states adding discrimination to their constitutions, declaring that gays can't marry and marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman. 31 states have a constitutional amendment discriminating against gay people and marriage/civil unions in some form. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Why is the DOMA/Defense of Marriage Act a federal law? No one is ASKING for an amendment. What the gay rights movement is all about is striking down the laws on the books that discriminate against gay people. That is why there are legal challenges going to the supreme court for both prop 8 in california, and multiple cases against DOMA. Two of which the justice dept just asked to be fast tracked to the SCOTUS. Once those type of bans are declared unconstitutional - gay people will have the right to enter into marriage contracts. And for the record -- I think the protections for churches should be reinforced. A church should not have to marry any couple they do not wish to. That is how it currently works. But the right fear mongers that if gay marriage is legal, gays will sue churches to perform their ceremonies. No they can't. Churches will not have to. But just to be safe, it should be reiterated. Besides, there are PLENTY of churches that already do marry gay people - and plenty more willing to. And that's assuming the majority of them WANT married in a church. |
