I gather from the comments on this thread that you think that someone committing mass murder is just expressing their constitutional rights. You seem to think that these rights are more important than the rights of innocent victims.
The majority of GLPers have some pretty extreme right wing views in my opinion. Also the majority are happy to discuss their mental illnesses as well. I have my doubts that most of you should have access to a personal arsenal either.
Highly armed loonies seem to be the cause of all these mass shootings.

We need to do something about dangerous people. We shouldn't choose to just sit around until there are helpless victims. The problem is that government needs more authority than it has to deal with extremists, but it is dangerous to give our government that power because of its history of abusing power given it. The only hope is some kind of compromise. Otherwise, we are letting it stand as morally permissible for future wrongdoers to have more protection than innocent bystanders. Government is supposed to stop threats and it can't do that with the mentality that a crime needs to first be in progress for them to do something about a potential situation. We need the technology to access thoughts, to see who is too dangerous BEFORE they hurt someone. To not stop dangerous people, to argue against doing something proactively is to aid their future crimes. So, we need a shift from a perspective of doing right by those "who have not offended (yet)" to doing right by those "who are good members of society."

So then we should accept your alternative where the technology exists to monitor dangerous people and allow people to think about going on shooting sprees (or the like) habitually with no action until they finally decide to do so? Sounds like the cause of death is the failure to be prepared. If you are not subject to the law until you offend then that also means that others are not protected by effect of the law. I think you'll find that this seemingly patriotic impulse is poorly thought out. We need to protect people who are members of society in good standing and that means stopping potential offenders before they act. The constitution can enable offenders just as it shields those who have not yet offended. Ultimately, the safety of good members of society is a more important priority than the freedom of those who would harm others without just cause. People who would harm without just cause are people who are going to have to be dealt with eventually, constitution or not. Why should we wait until there are victims? If the role of government is simply to respond, it doesn't make much of a dent in the decay of crime and corruption that threatens the good of society. I don't believe we should be idle by choice. There is something seriously wrong when criminals have rights even in their violating and the victims do not have any protection.

The "FBI" would never say such a thing. The head of the FBI, and his gay British lover, thats a different story...
