Northeast Florida air-conditioning contractors have already started to warn customers seeking repairs to brace for a dramatic jump in adding the gas that provides the coolant in air conditioners. Compared to a year ago, the price for putting Freon in a residential or commercial air conditioner will be radically more expensive.

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - If the air conditioning unit at your home was manufactured before 2010 expect a common summer repair to cost up to triple the usual amount.

There is now a new, environmentally friendly, version of Freon — the coolant gas used in a/c units. With the development of the new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-backed product, the old Freon, R-22, is being phased out.

Air conditioning professionals say with the elimination of R-22 consumers can expect repair costs to increase substantially.

“The refrigerant’s definitely gonna, it has tripled in cost so obviously that cost has be passed on to the consumer,” said Randy Kelly, with One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning. “So, if someone has a refrigerant leak and it has to have R-22 put back in it, it’s really gonna make that repair cost more.”

According to Kelly, the price for a pound of R-22 has jumped from around $20 a pound to up to $90.

Why is it so costly to change to an R-410A system?

If you choose to replace your system with an R-410A system, you will be forced to change the evaporator coil with the new R-410A air conditioner. This is required for a variety of reasons including thinner tube thickness and R-22 entrapment issues of which I will further explain later in this letter. The mandatory evaporator coil change out is costly since it is located in the attic area and in almost all cases in Red Rock, requires cutting of the trusses and/or removal of the furnace in order to remove the old coil and replace with a new coil. This is extremely labor intensive and may require additional drywall repair as well. The installation of an R-410A system can range from $7,963 to over $10,000 based on the difficulty and accessibility of the installation!

i have 20 years in AC and have owned a company in FL for 8 of thos, one man show. i fully support and fully understand the harmful effects of the gasses i work with daily. the science is there. r22 destroys ozone period. r410a is a MUST to save what we have left. whoever it was that has come up with the plan to alleviate the ozone effects, came along way too late. the cost of this is being driven by not only the gasses, but also general inflation across the board.

The point is this was suppose to be phased in by 2012. Yet regulations passed in March reduced the R22 supply to triple the price not allowing middle class home owners time to adapt to the changes. Conversion is over 3000 and this is fair?
