also meant to add, when my father was a kid, his father was injured and out of work for about a year. with 5 kids they ended up getting food stamps temporarily. However, it was a stigma, and they did all they could to get off. At one point, my grandmother bought salted pork with them, and was told "that was a luxury and they could not purchase it with food stamps.” When did this change? part of the reason i am where i am is because my father drilled it into us that we needed to go to school and take care of ourselves so that we would never live like that. When the fuck did this change? Don’t mean to rant, and again, I strongly believe that we should help those in need, but this is really pissing me off lately. One time I tried to help my best friend get temporary assistance when she was 6 months pregnant and her boyfriend thought heroin was more important than the baby (she left him). It was one of the most difficult things to get, and in the end, she gave up. So how the fuck do all these people get away with this?

I budgeted and planned my meals so that my pitiful 130 dollars a month would feed me...

I had no money no income and life sucked... but i had foodstamps and could eat...

I would buy big bags of rice and pinto beans and made each cent count...

Foodstamps roll over each month... kinda like unused AT&T mobile phone minutes...

Each month I would try to "save" a few "stamps"

and every 2 months I would buy myself a steak... thats all i got... the only way I could enjoy life... every 2 months...

I didnt abuse the system... i just ate pinto beans and rice... so I could afford a 10 dollar steak once in a while

Please dont get me wrong, im not saying people should not be able to buy staek once and a while, even if on the government dime. just see alot of abuse lately. Watched someone buy 6 lobsters on ebt the other day. up until recently, i spent maybe $40 a week on food because between school and rent, i could not afford it. but we did not starve and we made it last. just seems that people should be forced to make better decisions if they are getting government assistance. if they are buying whoopee pies, cigarettes or alcohol, maybe they dont need the assistance. ((and yes I know, food stamps don’t buy cigarettes, but the cash on the cars do.)

go to a market basket in Maine or NH. you wont say many minorities, but will see plenty of white people on food stamps. dont really think it is about race.

You begrudge poor people ice cream? Come on. You think you are poor because you are paying off loans but I doubt you shop at Goodwill for your dishes and clothes. Let the poor people have the few luxuries they can afford. Their children need the butter fat and calories. Don't be such a scrooge.

I grew up affluent middle class WASP. We baked our own cakes and grew our own berries and flowers and tomatoes. I don't begrudge welfare recipients the purchase of these little luxuries. let tax dollars buy them berries and tomatoes--"So expensive!"--is what my mother would cluck in the store. We couldn't afford such delicacies at those prices. We had to save our pennies for organic fertilizer. Let poor children have berries and tomatos at any price, you cheapskate. Let them have fancy cakes too.

No! Let them have all beans, rice, flour, sugar, fruits, and vegetables that they want. But they need to earn the luxuries in life.

I can't afford an ice cream cake right now. I sure don't want my tax dollars going to buy one. Especially when it's tax dollars that are use to buy that cake.

If they want an ice cream cake, they should get a job and buy one.

We are the richest nation on earth (or we were until recently) and there is NO EXCUSE for allowing anyone inside our country (immigrant or citizen) to do without basic nutrition! Remember, it's far cheaper to feed people than it is to hospitalize them for vitamin deficiencies or mal-nutrition and the various maladies that are caused by same!

Strictly from a practical standpoint, yes, people will scam the system now and then. Certain food items cannot be purchased on an EBT card. But lots of merchants and individuals cheat the system. Still all in all, it's better to feed people than to let them go hungry and die on the streets or worse!

hate to tell you but i am the oldest of 6 and we shopped at goodwill. Got some real nice clothes there. also, wokred since i was 10, because that was the only way i got the extra shit my friends got. there were times when i slept on a mattress on the floor. My husband had it even worse. they would go weeks without electricity or hot water. i am the first in my family to go to college. so yes, i do know what it is to struggle. just was also taught you need to work to get what you need. I really don support welfare for those in need. but since i moved to the city 6 years ago, have really seen how it is a way of life. until then i would never have thought i would have thought this way. but i have neighbors who's family's have beeen on welfare for multiple generations. their goal is to have kids so tey can collect their own check. i am not a bigot and dont pretend that i am better than anyone else. just after working 80 hours this week and still cant afford a lobster, kinda pisses me off.

i agree we should provide people nutrition. with the risk of exposing my self to bad karma, i admit, i would consider myself more of a communist than a capitalist. however, communism is " to each according to need, from each according to ability." theses people have the ability, just choose not to do use it. I was born with cancer, have had 10 surgeries since I was 10, and wrote many of my college papers from a hospital room. If I wanted to get disability, I could. I don’t, because I don’t need it and can support myself. Just don’t understand why others would not want to do the same. i suppose it may have to do with my upbringing.

very true. i represent low income criminal defendants. have not even begun to touch my student loans. but i wanted to do this to help people, and that is what i am doing. i pay the bills but not much else. my husband was laid off 3 years ago as well which doesnt help. many people (including my brothers and sisters) assume that all lawyers are rich. im sure the crooks are, but i am not.

we moved here 6 years ago when i got the job out of law school. not too far from mayor menino, but a few blocks away. coming from Maine, the rents were outrageous here and we found a spot bigger than our last but within our budget. not kidding about my neighbor. its an on-going joke in the building. every Friday night, never fail, her Puerto rican crack dealer shows up never to fail.
