Major morning quake rattles nation

A major quake estimated locally at 6.7 magnitude took place at 8:45 a.m. today, Wednesday, near Sámara on the west shore of the Nicoya Peninsula.

The quake was of long duration, perhaps as much as 30 seconds. The quake was felt strongly all over the country. Minor quakes followed.

The estimate of a magnitude by the U.S. National Earthquake center was 7.9. That agency said the quake was just 20 kilometers deep, some 12.5 miles. Shallow quakes generally cause more earth movement on the surface.

Looks the earth stood still after the big one. No aftershocks yet...

Noticed the same thing about the buoys going off on east coast...and at first they said 'tsunami warning' in Atlantic, then changed it to Pacific????

Earthquake was on LAND. So there cannot be a tsunami.

Tsunami's happen when the earth gets shifted up under water.

They will cancel the tsunami warning soon.

Costa Rica here, I am at 1000 feet asl and with a view of the Pacific ocean. If there is a tsunami coming I will be able to see it coming.

UPDATE 3: Local news is reporting that the epicenter was 8km NE of Samara.

UPDATE 4: Minor damages are reported at the University of Costa Rica.

UPDATE 5: Aftershocks are expected to last a few days and my exceed 6.0 on the richter scale.

UPDATE 6: Victor Rodriguez from Costa Rica’s OVSICORI agency: ”We ask people to abstain from going into a damaged house, we recommend people in the Pacific area to get away from beaches and look for higher gounds until the tsunami alert is over.“

UPDATE 7: Javier Valverde , a Guanacaste resident : “Currently things are okay, it was very strong but the Nicoya gulf was mostly affected, therefore, the tsunami alert. I am currently in a hotel in Playa Langosta. Tourists are being taken to higher grounds, about at least 30 meters above sea level.
