Taiwanese ship near disputed isles: Japan coast guard

A protest ship from Taiwan joined around a dozen Chinese vessels in waters near Japan-administered islands Friday as a territorial row simmered.

The Taiwan-registered ship was spotted 44 kilometers off Uotsurijima, the largest island in a group known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

Japan controls the islands though China and Taiwan also claim ownership.

China has reportedly sent two navy frigates to waters near the disputed islands, the first time for Beijing to send full-fledged warships to the area. The move followed the Japanese self-defence forces’ deployment of warships near the islands.

The two countries’ warships reportedly stay more than 100 kilometres away from each other. But they would still be able to strike at each other any time with their guided missiles. As such, an armed clash could occur, even if only by accident.

Around the islands, 16 Chinese surveillance vessels and 50 Japanese patrol boats, which are equipped with 40 mm machine guns, are also facing off against each other. China reportedly plans to send more surveillance vessels to the area to protect hundreds of Chinese fishing boats operating in waters off the islands.

The maritime confrontation is expected to continue for some time as China is intent on highlighting its dispute with Japan over the islands to invalidate Japan’s claim that there is no dispute regarding them. [link to www.asianewsnet.net]

The Japan Coast Guard on Saturday remained cautious about Chinese ships crowding near the Senkaku Islands, a major source of recent friction between the two Asian powerhouses.

As of 10 a.m., 12 Chinese marine or fishery surveillance ships were spotted near the Japan-administrated islands [link to english.kyodonews.jp]

Media organizations observed a joint drill Saturday of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and the U.S. Marine Corps on the western Pacific island of Guam, aimed at strengthening their ability to defend remote islands from foreign assault.

Taiwanese and Chinese ships crowded waters Friday near the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, the Japan Coast Guard said, amid continued disputes over sovereignty of the uninhabited islands China and Taiwan also claim.

The coast guard said it spotted a ship with Taiwanese activists aboard sailing in the contiguous zone outside Japanese territorial waters near the Senkakus, while Chinese surveillance boats also entered the zone.

The Taiwanese activists' ship left the waters in the morning but the coast guard also found a Taiwanese patrol vessel was headed in the contiguous zone around 8:20 p.m. for Uotsuri Island, the largest of the five main islets. The patrol ship left the zone later.

Four Chinese fisheries patrol ships remained in the contiguous zone as of 9 p.m., according to the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters based in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture.

Yep one of my taiwanese friend actually told me a lot of taiwanese feel like they are somehow related to the japanese. they essentially try their best to imitate the Japanese, from soap tv to gay-ish make up styles.

My friend herself was disgusted by it but she said it was because japan occupied taiwan for quite long and the locals were basically brainwashed for generations, so bad that during WWII some of them even volunteered to fight for Japan, quite stunning indeed.

China is having a leadership change so this is a little Chineses government distraction. All countries can share this island and its waters.
China is almost entirely dependent on U.S. and Japanese business.
If the U.S. and Japan were to stop business, the Chinese economy would collapse.
