The lack of local media coverage is unreal...there some folks in the BR Metro that are completely unaware of this....too busy with their own thing I guess??? If anyone in Baton Rouge is even remotely unaware, much less completely unaware of this, then they don't watch TV, read the papers, or use the internet, OR has their head in the sand. Channels WAFB (Ch 9 ), WBRZ ( Ch 2 ), NBC33 (Ch 33) and WVLA (Ch 8 ) have a spot on it every newscast. The Advocate has an article every day, practically. As does several other newspapers. Seriously.....completely unaware because of lack of media coverage? I have to agree with this because people link it here. I've seen the Advocate articles and even seen a few clips from those news channels. Though the news channel clips were a while ago. People only seem to post the stuff with more impact. What I meant....but came out wrong in composing my post on the fly....was that some people I came across in the city (BR) haven't a clue/lack of knowledge of what's going on, even with the local media coverage..which I find unreal! Sorry for ruffling any feathers....I should of have proof-read my post....sometimes I type faster than I think...LOL! What you really mean, is that people are simply just not interested. They are probably sitting right there watching the news and just glaze over when the clips regarding this come on. Lots of people only tend to be interested in something they think is only affecting them. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9258462 United States 10/02/2012 03:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What I love about the whole situation on this gas is that people talk as if they have or will be able to smell it. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24682341 Natural Gas/Methane is odorless. Meaning that if you walk into a confined space with a high enough concentrate of it you wont know it until it's too late. Gas companies add a chemical to it called "mercaptan" which is sulfur based and thus makes the gas smell like rotten eggs. They add this so that one knows they have a leak present. If you went out to the sink hole you wouldn't be able to smell the gas at all, because it's unrefined and straight from the source. If you do smell anything at all it's from the rotten earth being "stewed" up. |

beeches User ID: 14127627 United States 10/02/2012 04:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Information about methane: I once got a noseful of it and it really is odorless - from a clean but unused toilet I was trying to unplug. It felt like inhaling a plastic sheet. All of a sudden my lungs had no traction, no air, could barely breathe. I ran out of there so fast I have no memory of it. At the hospital 15 minutes later my heart rate was over 182. It stayed up for a while, but I was fine a few hours later. The staff had never heard of methane from unused toilets, but apparently it does collect in the pipes sometimes. The treatment was supportive - they had to figure out just what it was, and by then my body was handling it. Liberalism is totalitarianism with a human face – Thomas Sowell |

The modern toilet is designed to block sewer gases by trapping water in the turn built into the toilet. If there is no water in the toilet.. it doesn't block the sewer gases. My husband does business with a fellow in the Baton Rouge area. So we just called his office an hour ago to see what people down there are thinking, or at least one person. They say it's on the local news but not affecting them. They did not seem too concerned. Not interpreting this, just reporting it. I would be more than a little curious, some kind of cell phone alert maybe? What are any schools in the area doing in terms of monitoring? |

I have just been to read about sink holes to try and grasp the doom, but they seem to be a pretty normal thing no? Help me out a bit here. Quoting: Ladydoom Sinkholes in themselves, are not necessarily a problem.. I live in a sinkhole prone place. The problem is in what else is in the immediate and adjacent areas (above anmd below ground) and the effects of various scenarios on life and land.. The sinkhole itself is just a more visible symptom of an ongoing escalating problem that presents many complications.. Chances are you don't live in the Gulf states. The BP disaster had plenty of affect over where I live in Florida. One cannot discount the spreading affects of wind, rain, and the ability of liquid to spread what it contains. The entire area, not just bayou corne is not only full of oil gas wells, sites, but many many chemical waste dump sites. Then there is the geological component, and questions about chemical combinations, and a lot flammable substances which under the right conditions can explode and fireball. There are a lot of companies using this area., not just 7-8. I was directed to a louisiana DNR site for info, and already the interactive map for Assumption and some adjacent counties does not work in a way that will allow the viewer to see most of the options related to gas/oil- including well pits. Injection wells were allowed. I am not familiar enough with it to see if there is a section for chemical stroage. |
