We should get a fantastic curving tail. I only wonder what it might look like. Knowing the tail is debris cast away from solar winds, the tail will be awesome cause the Suns proximity will create a massive tail, that means we may see a dramatic effect around the daylight Sun. Curving halo type effect. |

Curving halo type effect. If we are lucky it could be like Comet McNaught in 2007: [link to www.google.de] . Yes, except this time we will see the arcing directly behind the Sun. So we may not see the curvature but we WILL see the comets tail going through the Sun, especially during sunrise and sunset. Since the tails debris is on the far side of the Sun we will get the best reflection possible. Illuminating the tail very well. Since the tail will be curved, there is a good chance we will see some sort of prism effect. Space Rainbow behind the Sun. There is also the possibility the Comet explodes from rapid heating. If that happens, well, we will see a VERY RARE and beautiful show. Someone said we will not have a meteor shower from this comet but I have to disagree on this note: The curving tail will eject material across our orbital plane. Roughly 6 months later we will be in a small area that cuts across our orbit. Could be a fantastic meteor shower. This is gonna be sooooo cool. Reserve your seats at a dark sky site now while there is still vacancy. Cherry Springs PA is a great place to vacation and watch this show unfold. |

It was me in another thread - I looked only for the time after perihelion, not before. You are right: Around Nov. 1, 2013 the comet will cross Earth orbit only slightly (some million km) above the ecliptic. Depending on the activity at that time it will leave a more ore less dense dust tail behind him. At that time Earth is 1.32 AU (185 million km) from the comet (Doom off). Earth will enter this tail around Jan. 19, 2014. As said above, depending on the activity of C/2012 S1, a higher count of meteors is possible - if we are lucky it's also possible, that we get a new meteor stream like the Leonids or Perseides. At that time C/2012 S1 is allready on its way out of the solar system, 0,76 AU (115 million km) behind Earth (Also doom off). . :ase26122019: Annular Solar Eclipse - December 26, 2019 - Kannur, Kerala, India |

They now have a 'comet nuclear magnitude' of 10.0 listed here [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] If you plug that 10.0 in here [link to www.minorplanetcenter.org] You get a nucleus size of about 20 kilometers. This just happens to be the 'default' comet size for Starry Night Pro. When there isn't a 'known' comet size, Starry Night uses 20 km and an Absolute magnitude of 6. Those numbers give a current Apparent Magnitude of around 17.9, which pretty much agrees with the observations here [link to www.minorplanetcenter.net] So, I'm going to say this Comet's size is around 20 km, pretty much a normal size for a Comet. Sorry Jim... [link to www.jmccanneyscience.com] |

Note the close pass by Mars and the missing "Condition Code" at JPL [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] Quoting: TBar1984 This should be interesting.... Well, it's a Hyperbolic Comet. Meaning, it's not expected back, hence, no Condition Code. Oh well... [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] It is Nibiru and is heading straight towards earth. Talking of Nibiru, where is it? its like what nearly the middle of October, and it still hasnt made an appearance in the Sky? The only anomaly I see is that we haven't caught up to where the observations began. This gives the appearance of a 'thin' spot directly ahead of the Earths Orbit. I don't see an 'abundance' in any certain direction. |
